    Memories of Renney Lentney

Best memory was the summer camp of I think 1971, surfing in cornwall, shark fishing from Looe, initiative tests at Pier Cellars the old midget submarine base across Plymouth Sound, pot holing in the warmth of summmer, now that is what I call adventure training.

Worst memory is 1985 as a PS Sgt, We had a dinner night at renney then went into Plymouth!!
I was slaughtered and had to go trekking on dartmoor the next day. In the front of a 4 tonne truck, hangover from hell, black clouds, rain coming down in sheets, dartmoor looming and looking like the set from "hound of the baskervilles" and wishing I was dead.

I was A1A in sept 71. Missed out A4A and went to 5/6 Trade Troop, life got a bit easier then....perhaps I know you?

Commander......Sad tho I am, I'm trying to remember the Chieftain gunner sight graticules.........for some reason I thought SABOT was fired on the dot markings which were above the HESH numbered markings. Reason being SABOT was quicker and more directl...HESH was slower and lobed at the target hence the gun either being near horizontal or elevated.

I do remember the radio op/loader working like a demon between loading/making safe/unloading the GPMG, loading/making safe/unloading the .50, listening to the commander for the next round selection/making sure the bag charge matched the projectile, keeping his hands nimble around the breach, keeping well away when the gun recoiled, dealing with any miss-fires/obstructions and praying to the highest god that there was never a scratch along one of the obturators (spelling???)....

Don't suppose anyone can remember the old Chieftain gunnery cries???
Ranging Sabot tnk on, on , loaded, bang away with ranging gun, stike observed sabot dot 2 fire, gunner then lays relevant asabot dot on tgt and fires, 3 round controlled shoot by cmdr. Yes it is the dots at top but have to use the ranging dots within the HESH scale first. TLS much nicer (when it worked)

    Tankieboy,you´re a Sprog!

I think I must have been one of the first in BFG to have been cursed with a Laser sight.Must have been ´76/77.It was shite, the fire order went something like:- Ranging hesh tank on-On-(press button)2,200,commander had to then deduct 200 metres, and give range to gunner, the only problem was that the range was allways wrong, and I had to go into a telescope shoot, hence, for every shoot:-

    Ranging Hesh Tank on,
    ON,press button,2,000,
    1,800, ON,BOLLOCKS!!! (Obvious massive discrepancy)
Turn to telescope and start normal drills with .50 cal,
    etc etc

Lots of screaming and shouting, wonderfull, still managed good results and speeds, though I must be in the guinness book of records for being able to get that sight in and out for the REME tech, from all previously supposed impossible angles.

THE best shoot however was a Mover, fire order:_

    GOT ONE!
    KILL IT!
    LOADED!
    FIRING..NOW!!
    TARGET!!

The shock on the RTR IG´s face at a 1 second aquisition time, must have been amazing, didn´t know how we did it,and we didn´t tell him! C/S 23 QDG.- Lt Long John H**k,Dick H.(loader)D.Bald***(drv).

Chietain gunnery was the greatest, but the hours on exercise, sitting with the rain running down your neck, now that was a real waste of time.RECCE RULES!!

HESH semi-indirect was a great shoot till computers took over. HESH on zero scales etc.

Yeah, you could ´talk to the round´on the way to the target, great days, pity about computers taking over, why should they have all the fun?

Loading 120,bleeding fingers,.50 gun drills, loved it,really p*ss*d off when ranges was over,it was the only time when all were equal;it didn´t matter how big and gobby you were, if you were slow, or didn´t/couldn´t,hit the target !
