Mind you how difficult is it to go left/right flanking or bags of smoke & straight up the middle & when not delivering large amounts of lead to the enemies of Her Majesty doing a bit of the stampy stuff outside palaces. I mean I used to teach students how to do it at University Army Club

I think we should recognise that the Foot Guards and Household Cav play their part on operations and have taken casualties. This speaks to enduring utility within the future force but in proportion to reductions elsewhere in the Inf and RAC.

To me the only issue I have revolves around the need to maintain the Mounted Regiment and King's Troop when combat capability is being cut. However, there have always been arguments that the pomp and circumstance that these units lend to visiting dignitaries helps oil the wheels of soft power and of course enhances tourism in London and Windsor. However, I have never seen the latter quantified in hard numbers.

On balance I think both should combined into one smaller combined unit. Clearly, I'm an heretic.

Arent' the King's Troop current sending blokes out to Herrick... admittedly attached to units with slightly newer equipment and more 'horse power'.

You'll probably find HCMR is bareboned too.

The TA is also sending people on Herricks as is every other unit in the British Army. It does not make them protected from cuts or less loyal.

I am aware that other units have carried out ceremonial, therefore, why do we need the Guards, MR and KT to do it the rest of the time. They have even let the RAF do it!

Rotation of London Garrison could then become a far more sensible process than it is today and perhaps we could get away from the Horseguards tribal fiefdom that London is.

As the picture below illustrates we appear to have moved a long way from needing 6 footers only and note the medals or lack thereof:

Dry books of tactics are beneath the notice of a man of genius, and it is a known fact that every British officer is inspired with a perfect knowledge of his duty, the moment he gets his commission; and if it were not, it would be sufficiently acquired in conversaziones at the main-guard or the grand sutler's.

Never said anyotherwise... I quite like the idea of hte WHOLE Armed Forces being drawn upon to stand stag. You get spotters collecting the 'set'.

I wouldn't get too carried away by the photo and lack of medals. Those lads are highly likely to have been taken from the incremental companies. Irish Guards lad is probably from the IG, they are on PDs at the moment. Not sure who is the other Bn on PDs.

Shouldn't the Irish Guardsman be in the middle? With the Welsh Guardsman between the Irish and Coldstream? Why the fcuk is he in the middle?

I assume you're another one that thinks being infantry is easy, not a real 'trade', etc. Remember who you all exist to support please!!!! Asshole!

That picture must be either quite old or very selective for the shortage of medals judging by the racks I see on most Guardsmen now!

As far as I understand it, the incremental Guards companies in London are mostly just-passed-out-of-ITC sprogs, getting a good dose of Household Division bull before being released into the tender care of their Battalions, hence scant racks.

Still prompts the question whether we're a touch over-provided with both ceremonial units and ceremonies for them to undertake.
Years since living the dream and having to make an honest living:

Pretty easy. I mean it can't be that difficult to mooch about the place looking hard & grunting at each other. FFS, I trained a bunch of students to do attacks up to Company level & many of them were girls.

Alternatively read my post No 51 where I admit I was after a bite, or at least if you are an Infanteer get someone to read it to you
