I recently read the biography of Sir Michael Ansell, a former officer of the 5th DG - he recalled that during a prolonged pre-war tour of India the 5/6 DG actually had two officers' messes, neither of which socialised with the other. A remarkable man, subsequently blinded at St Valery commanding the Lothian Yeomanry - Obituary: Sir Michael Ansell - People - News - The Independent.

    Happy now?

Off yer go, then and good luck. Maybe when/if you (and your Regt) can come up with some sensible and reasoned argument yourselves, you might get some in return.

I dont know why im writing this actually because such comments deserve a blunt FO, but just in case your addled memory is failing you; I do remember a certain RTR regiment with the number 3 who revelled in their West Country roots and were a thoroughly good bunch of blokes who we crossed swords with on a number of occasions in the RAC Cup Rugby. I would have thought that you do them and yourself a serious disservice using such cheap shot language. I happen to think that our campaign has succeeded on a number of levels and the WELSH regiment that is QDG; and has been since formation, will continue to thrive and succeed whereas sitting there waiting for the shot in the back of the head; the option others seem to have adopted will lead to inexorably to destruction and the history books. I am off now as Arse drives me mad. I just wanted to put what i thought to be a measured, reasonable argument outlining why we adopted such a strategy and underlining the fact that until the goalposts moved we would have been content to amalgamate. But i was wrong, all ive done is invite invective just like i thought would happen.
I wish you well, but no more texts eh! You might get a visit x
Yeah my beloved '3rd of Track' which if you remember were assigned to the history books on the last tranche, however the spirit of them lives on in the new 2nd! It will be a shame if that spirit is diluted even further and it will be a travesty if the QDG or the ScotsDG and 9/12th are left alone again. Anyway all the best ------ and I hope all the bleating comes to fruition...........not!

Rather than looking at yourself in the mirror and praising your defence of your Regiment at all costs.

Why not look in to the mirror and think, we helped the RAC become what it is today...

Taffcav, while I understand the thrust of your argument and have sympathy for your cause, we (the RAC) are now at a stage beyond which we can afford inter regimental fighting.

As some of the detail of the Army 2020 structure emerges (see the multi role brigades thread in the staff officers forum), it is clear that the RAC collectively will be receiving a body blow that may leave it anywhere up to 40% smaller than it is today (i.e. potentially as small as 6 or 7 regiments in total from the current 11). With this sort of reduction being considered and the subsequent proportion of the army that the RAC as a whole will then make up, we cannot afford not to speak with a single voice. Be very clear, there are going to be cuts, by 2016 the RAC will look very different to how it looks today. It is critical now that we (the RAC community) act collectively and decisively to provide an RAC structure which is enduring, provides maximum capability and flexibility for money and which best supports our soldiers. Our effort should be directed towards saving what remains of the RAC in optimum form rather than fighting for individual regiments. If we (the RAC regiments) stand now together and speak with one voice, we will survive; if we try to fight for individual regimental survival pitting regiment against regiment, we will be picked off regiment by regiment and in doing so fail the next generation of soldiers.

Ironically for a cavalryman, I suggest that we (the RAC) 'form square' so to speak and await the upcoming announcements preparing to defend what we can collectively. Unfortunately, I suspect that the initial announcements will not talk about individual regiments and may not even absolutely define the exact size and shape of the RAC.

The threat/opportunity (I would suggest) comes in the realm of ISTAR, I suggest that we should focus our effort on ensuring that the RAC (FR type) are accepted as being the army's ISTAR lead and thus that existing RAC ISTAR capabilities are retained by the RAC and we should work to ensure that we exploit any opportunities to expand imto both existing and emerging ISTAR capabilities. It is thus sort of approach that will keep the RAC a viable organisation in the future, not protectionism at an individual regimental level.

So, stand together or die singularly, your choice. A RIFLES esque culture or fight it out between yourselves like SCOTS?
    Please no, not the face!...

And to think if the RAC Council had a little more brains they would be flying Apache now as Air Cav and would have left the dirty smelly tanks to the RTR.
Dry books of tactics are beneath the notice of a man of genius, and it is a known fact that every British officer is inspired with a perfect knowledge of his duty, the moment he gets his commission; and if it were not, it would be sufficiently acquired in conversaziones at the main-guard or the grand sutler's.
