That was nothing but a fire trench.
Can I refer you to these pics that I have posted earlier.

'Tis a pity Chieftans can't do the same.

I remember seeing a similar attempt on Soltau in 1983 where the RE Sqn Comd bet his 3 RTR oppo one of his Chieftains couldn't couldn't jump a AT ditch without help. We all lined up to watch and the results were predictably spectacular - the Chiefy got across the gap - just, but hadn't traversed its gun fully and certainly wouldn't have been able to engage anything afterwards.

Now that is fucking spooky - the above post has just appeared showing an RTR Chieftain.......................
The stopped clock of The Belfast Telegraph seems to indicate the
    time
Of the explosion - or was that last week's? Difficult to keep
    track:
Everything's a bit askew, like the twisted pickets of the
    security gate, the wreaths,
That approximate the spot where I'm told the night patrol
    went through.

It also helps when your tank only weighs about 45 tonnes as opposed to proper tanks which weigh 65 tonnes and up, bit more difficult to get them off the ground with that weight.
The role of cavalry in war is to bring style and panache to what would otherwise be just an ugly brawl.

Remember seeing a Yank Engineer Unit digging tank ditches on Hohne Dry. Was doing my CR1 Dvr conversion at the time and the Instr asked if we could try and cross the ditches.

Lots of laughing from them until we jumped it, then their jaws hitting the floor when we did it in reverse.

Think I have to say the reverse one hurt, just a bit, but well worth it to see the look on their faces.

CR1 was good at jumping but it had to have a decent lift off point, we did lots of it during the initial conversion in 84-86 for demos. Never actually heard of anyone doing it in reverse to be fair and it is hard to imagine how it would have gotten the speed up ion reverse to jump a trench let alone an anti tank ditch. We did used to race Chieftain in reverse though which was always funny when we won every time.
