Actually, if uniform was a 'minimum' then what would be the maximum? Should I wear Mess Dress for lunch in the Pillared Hall? Should I consider No 1 Dress for sitting at my workstation? Or just SD?

Actually I think I'll dust off my tropical stone No 14 dress or whatever it is when you storm MB demanding uniform :D

Re: Should Military MOD Staff Wear Uniform?

So should MOD Staff have to go to work in civvies, get changed into CS95 or whatever, work for the day, then get changed back out of CS95 or whatever, back into civvies, and all for an office job.

    Hmm.

    I'd say, no.

    For these reasons:

1: They're spending their working day for the most part, in an office environment. So in this extent, a suit and shoes would be far more comfortable and sensible than say CS95 and boots (Feet sweating, etc). If they're in a higher order of Dress, unless for short official engagements, then it's going to be a fairly uncomfortable day, and not the best inducement to work hard.

2: I compare this to my undying, deep hatred for bandies. They spend their working days in barracks mincing about in suits, but every so often you see them in uniform, mincing about. I want to kill them all, as they have no right to wear the green, as they are trade first, soldier second. Don't argue this point, because it's a solid fact. The fact that they don't do stags, don't do Regimental PT, and generally have nothing to do with every day duties, shows this to be true.
So why wear a uniform if you're not soldiering? You're in an office. Wear office dress, not barrack dress. Fit in with everyone else. Who cares? If the majority occupiers of the building are civillians, wear a suit. If nothing more, saves you from standing out and perhaps being subject to subtle discrimination. Think about it.

I had more, but I forgot them as I got consumed by my bandie hatred.

The other argument of wearing uniform outside of Barracks.... F**k off. Not a chance.
I'll do it in my own area, if I'm nipping with the duty driver out somewhere, and there's more than one of us, or if I'm generally confident of my surroundings, but really, only a death wish would find me wearing CS95 outside of my immediate barracks area, unless on duty.
There are far too many lunatics.
Hell, I went on leave to go camping, and packed all my leave gear into my Bergen, as it was ideal for camping with. I even got issues from some maniac on the tube just because I had an army Bergen. Was in total civvie outfit, but the Bergen drew him to me like a moth to a flame. So f**k wearing CS95 anywhere in London unless I had my rifle with me!

Also, unless you live in a Garrison or pads estate, you don't want random peeps knowing that a soldier lives in house number 15, so don't wear them home from work either.

It's hard not to be proud and show it off, but it's liable to get us into trouble when there's no QRF waiting.

So what you're saying Mr Bane is if you are in an office just wear a suit. OK, so that means all Bn HQ staff should be in a suit including all Coy HQ staff (CSM, Coy Cdr/2IC oh, and don't forget the CQMS). What complete and utter bollocks you speak!

Whatever next, "sorry sir don't feel comfortable in all this uniform stuff and body armour, I feel I could be a lot more productive shooting Terry if I was dressed in a grass skirt and two coconut shells across my chest."

    Get a life you dick!

You really didn't read his post properly did you.

I suggest, my dear, that it is you who is the dick who needs a life. Step away from the keyboard and give the village a chance to get to know you properly.

I think it helps to insult someone if you don't inadvertently point out how thick you are.
    Read my post again. Slowly.

    Just in case though;

There is more than one office environment. The majority of this discussion relates to the office environment in a civillian workplace, say Whitehall. True, the office in question may be for military purposes etc, but it is primarily staffed by civillians. The military people are usually massively outnumbered.

That's when you need to use common-sense to understand which one is being discussed.
    Obviously you didn't.

Mr Bane needs to get a life regarding uniform. Soldiers, sailors and airmen wear their uniform to work across the world daily - sometimes out of barracks - and guess what ? ... no one dies. The idea that wearing uniform somehow makes you susceptible to being attacked is complete co ck.

Re: Should Military MOD Staff Wear Uniform?

It is a long tradition in London District that one doesn't wear uniform (working dress, CS95, or whatever else you want to call it) except in one of the barracks or aboard ship if one is at Northwood or in the Admiralty Building. If one isn't in barracks or on a ship, one wears London District order (suit with regimental tie). It's been like that since the days of Queen Victoria, it works, and there's no reason to change it.

Lets just think that one over, shall we? Because I never had to check under my car before I drove home.
