I suspect that 99% of poster on threads like this are highly intelligent (Post Graduate or academic quals) or very experienced time served soldiers. The demographic being discussed on the other hand are on the whole low academic achievement, some from inner city/council estates and many from dysfunctional backgrounds. Very few ‘rocket scientists’ volunteer to join the infantry etc. It is also rather remarkable how some of us forget the admin clusters that most of us where (well me anyway I know some posters have always been perfect ).

In my opinion (and it is only opinion) we do have a duty to look after these youngsters in their formative years once we take them away from their natural environment. This goes beyond Phase 1/2 Trg and probably would take them through their first few years in the Field Army, this should be allied with educating them how to function as adults, a bit like the parents that we are replacing (if indeed they have parents in the first place). After all we are quite prepared to send them to war and to die for us as required.

I have never agreed with PAYD and there are several threads on her where I state my reasons (again only my opinion) and I won’t ‘flog a dead horse’. What I will say is that contractors promised the earth to get their ‘in’ and they did promise to feed soldiers on the DMR, that is rapidly becoming a thing of the past, £8.00 a day may be reasonable but it is £3.00 a day more than what a soldier would have payed (regardless of earlier posts I defy anyone to survive on the Core menu, even if you can still get it). These prices will only increase as the contracts come up for renewal, because they now have us over a barrel in most locations.

Also soldiers are getting sent on career courses (married & single) for the benefit of the army, some for a considerable length of time and being told to pay for themselves, now I am no expert but from my limited experience of the civilian world companies pay their employees expenses (food and accommodation) when they send them away on course yet since PAYD we don’t.

Soldiers should (in general) pay for what they eat, however, there are better ways than PAYD. Right I will step back and await the incoming

They get paid, they can afford to eat. Seems they need to have a bit more self control over their finances or stop whinging, but hey this was on the cards when PAYD was just a scribble on a main building memo.

Soldiers that can't afford to feed themselves in my opinion should be disciplined as they can't perform the job efficiently that they are paid to do, simple.
Speaking as ex ACC/RLC myself, can you, as a service supplier, answer the question why food cannot be paid for on a credit basis ie eat in Jan, pay in Feb especially as you expect your suppliers to wait, normally, for 90 days before being paid?

Still CAARPS make very eloquent and sensible points. I loved the previous system.

A rump steak was the norm at Brawdy most nights, cooked by a genuine RLC chef who you actually called 'Chef'.

Well, you recall wrongly, you fkin idiot, all that happened was that the money which used to be taken from source to pay for the food was now left in your paypacket, hardly a fkin payrise!

Fuck knows how as they're not allowed candles in their rooms but guess that's due to sympathetic hierarchy.
The man who is allowing that to happen wants to have a long read of JSP 464, Pt 3 (Para 0609).

You could do, quite easily. It wouldn't be the tastiest or most exciting diet but you get enough to live on.

DP is an AI in the ACF. This qualifies him to talk about the Army.
