Just pull yourself erect and make garbled noises. It's the thought that counts.
You don't salute whilst sat down.

If you find yourself in a sitting position when an orafice passes by, simply brace as per you would when sitting on the front row of a regt photo, and say "Sir" in a greeting sort of way.

Not so. If you're the front seat passenger in a vehicle, you're required to salute - but mind you don't clout the driver with "the longest way up".

Same applies if you're sitting nearest the tailgate of a Bedford or similar.

In either of these circumstances, standing up is not recommended.

So, a TA battalion or nine Regular Guards battalions? Not a difficult choice, then (especially as we don't have nine Regular Guards battalions).

    Recruit Lampard

Certainly you have lived up to your expectations of looking stupid on here.

You salute an officer (when wearing headdress) wether they are indoors, outdoors, if its raining or if Satan himself has chosen to stand in the rear rank.

Of course if you have previously saluted that officer already that day, you do not need to salute again, if indoors or not, unless you are not going to see them again. (Standby Rek)

If in doubt, throw up a kipper or (like me) find something more interesting in the general direction of away.

    Or Alternatively

    Join the Navy

A naval rating only salute indoors on three occasions

    1. When you are in the poo
    2. When you are not in the poo and are going to get a medal or a chuck up
    3. When you are reporting a compartment for rounds

I was on a crosspol with an army clerk in the Falklands years ago, walked into the OCs office, handed him his mail, nice cheerful "Morning Sir" "Don't you salute in the Navy"? was his opening remarks, my closing one was "No" pause 2-3 "Cheers sir" and wombled out.

Thus forever reinforcing his opinion that the RN are a bunch of slovenly gits.

That was the same trip that they brought in the rule about saluting on the main drag at MPA, cos all the Ruperts were getting annoyed about not getting their salutes from the RN.

    Happy days

Does an Officer have to return a salute or is simply acknowledging it with a thank-you acceptable?

I cant believe im even replying to this but the fact that there is some confusion makes me wonder what sort of uber walts are trawling this site!?!?!?!?

I hope and pray that this is a Wah!!!!

You salute when wearing head-dress, indoors or outdoors, you never salute with a left hand and if not wearing head-dress you brace up.

A salute is returned by the Officer being saluted or if no head-dress is worn then they should brace up. Any other response is rude and unproffesional. End of.

No Wah. RAF Officers seem to think it acceptable. Occasionally they don't even bother with that.
