They were the days...
Polio, rickets, unreported child abuse.
Rose tinted glasses; things were always better in our youth, mainly because we had no responsibilities and time on our hands.
There aren't more paeodos than there were.
In 1949 we had the acid bath murderer, then there was John Christie in 1953.
Then we advanced to the Moors Murderers.
Things aren't that much worse or better. They're just different.
I'd imagine if a kid knocked on your door to ask for a glass of water you'd probably assume they were casing the joint. The sand of the desert is sodden red-
Red with the wreck of the square that broke
The gatling's jammed and the colonel dead,
And the regiment blind with dust and smoke.
The river of death has brimmed its banks,
And England's far, and Honour a name,
But the voice of a schoolboy rallies the ranks-
"Play up! Play up! And play the game!"

OK, have it your own way and pour cold water on everything. On a thread like this I fancied I might have been forgiven for indulging in a touch of nostalgia, but obviously I was wrong. Back to the über-cynical modern football.
The man o' independent mind,
He looks an' laughs at a' that.

I think we can probably all agree that the Beano/Dandy was better back then before the PC madness got hold of it. No doubt it helped a bit towards literacy and reading too.
For where thou art, there is the world itself, and where thou art not, desolation.

Not cynical. People enjoyed their youth in the 1940's, the 1980's and the BedIn minors appear to be happy now.
Just realistic. The sand of the desert is sodden red-
Red with the wreck of the square that broke
The gatling's jammed and the colonel dead,
And the regiment blind with dust and smoke.
The river of death has brimmed its banks,
And England's far, and Honour a name,
But the voice of a schoolboy rallies the ranks-
"Play up! Play up! And play the game!"
