I remember bottles like that but US milk trucks were more enclosed. The crates of milk bottles were covered in chipped ice and as kids you would ask the milkman for a bit of ice to suck on. That stopped in 1953 or 1954 when there was a polio epidemic and the milk company was afraid if a kid got polio they would be blamed for dirty ice.
Polio is a horrible thing from my formative years. Three kids in my neighborhood got it, one is still in town still on crutches, a local lawyer and councilor.Nuair a chacann caora, cacann siad uilig

We hired one to take our wedding guests from the Church in Clapham Common to the reception at the Lanesborough.
Part of my tasks before the wedding was to go to Brixton Bus Garage and decorate the bus, then head to the Lanesborough and get myself suited and booted before heading to the church.
When my supporters and I got to the bus garage the bus wasn't ready so the bod suggested we go and have a cuppa in the canteen, which we did. Two hours later (1130) I was sitting in the Lanesborough being served a nerve-settling Armagnac by a butler. Talk about one extreme to another! The only good thing I can say about my sister-in-law is that she's fat -
so there'll be plenty of room for everyone who wants to dance on her grave.

These were the ones that took us to far off places like St Albans (14 miles) when I was a kid...
...but these were the 'around town' buses...
...and these took you North to far off places like Bedford (20 miles), they were yellow and black.

We had these until around the early 60's. The old Trolly bus.

Remember travelling across England as a kid (on my own, wasn't I a big boy!) on the Paddington-Plymouth line and spending a few pennies in these beauties!
This memory belongs to the West Somerset Railway Line.
