Slightly off topic, but the mention of KRRC reminds me of this compass (the smaller one) I have dated 1917. The leather case dated 1916 bears the name '2Lt JC Mackenzie 12th KRRC' and 12th/60th on the other side. The initials 'HH' are also on it.

It was like that when I got here.

There was a nice little lecture on Great War accoutrements at the IWM a few years ago, whistles and Binos if I recall almost all were named to Regts and officers, it was assumed unnamed ones were from nco's!

Is this because it was assumed the NCOs wouldn't nick each other's kit but the offrs would ?

Apparently some moderators take themselves very, very seriously, and cannot abide posts such as:

Some comments are allegedly "very very nasty and uncalled for."

Possibly, that and officers had the option to privately purchase (SNCO's could too and a few used prizes) but I also suspect that a few werent issued so werent stamped up!

I joined C Coy 2RGJ in early 78, just after the South Armagh tour. I seem to remember having to wear the silver badge all of the time in Tidworth and for some parts of the 79 NI tour, like town patrols, but then had the black badge if going out in the cuds and for 3 or 4 day patrols/OPs/etc.

We still had the silver badge for barracks in Minden , 1980, but we had the black badge for the 81/82 Belfast tour and then kept it permanately a little bit after that on return to Minden. We then kept it until Warminster.

My understanding was that it was a direct link to the 60th Rifles/KRRC, and that's what I told all who asked when I was on courses , etc.

Looking back, it seems weird that the CO got away with it?
Well remembered bro. Your memory is better than mine about such things.

I also joined the bn in early/mid 78, not long before we all went off on a jolly to Cyprus - bloodhound camp if I remember correctly. Fookin'ell, that was 35 years ago............

    Good luck and keep safe..........

1RGJ in the 70's wore silver stay brite cap badges. The only time black cap badges were worn was on tour across the water in 73 and 74/75. We were on tour again in 77 and everybody expected to get black badges issued again but we were told to continue wearing the silver ones as a sign of normality of our presence on the streets.
