You've obviously had a bad experience there, but whenever I've been there (including with brother officers) I've found the service excellent in a non-gay way, and the menu entirely AIDS free.

I live about 200 yards away from Maggie Jones's and have eaten there many times. The throbbingly homosexual nature of the place is not immediately apparent, but I'd suggest you switch your Gaydar on next time you go in...
An excellent Chinese restaurant that I visit when I'm in London. Not your usual chinatown restaurant, as this doesn't seem to pull in the tourists, but more the local chinese population. Having lived in Hong Kong for a number of years, this is pretty close to the real Hong Kong dining experience.
Wiltshire
The Manor Hotel, Castle Combe, Nr Chippenham
A bit of fine dining in the Bybrook Restaurant of this hotel is not to be missed if you are Wiltshire way. Treat yourself to a long Sunday lunch where the food is just brilliant, topped off with a walk in the beautiful grounds.
Cornwall
Food for Thought, Fowey
Oh my goodness! Just a brilliant seafood restaurant, which wants to make me move to Cornwall! Set right on the waterfront in Fowey this is a smart place, but not stuffy. The seafood is so fresh and tasty I'd eat at Food for Thought every week if I could.
Sandbanks near Poole; Shell Bay Cafe, evening menu superb.
Poole: Checkers on the sea front.
Oban; Oyster bar and Brewery on Seil island(drive over the bridge) has its own microbrewery.
Oban: The Oyster inn and Ferymans, food in the pub or the beutiful sea view restaurant attached.
La Palmyre: leGolfy by the harbour, mad waiters brilliant food. yes I know its in France but they were awfuly nice chaps.
Been a bit busy recently but still managed to find some time to visit a restaurant or two.
Went to Joe Allen's again recently (Exeter Street, I think, tucked away on the Charing Cross side of Covent Garden). Still a perfectly good bistro, good early evening deals, ask for the hamburger (it's not actually on the menu).
Also re-visited Foxtrot Oscar(Royal Hospital Road). Still full of Sloanes in omni-coloured cords but for some reason has recently become infested with outrageously posh young-ish crumpet. Perfectly average food but a bit of a laugh and tucked away in a quiet bit of Chelsea.
Since visited the Gaucho Grill at Canary Wharf. Affirm previous comments, would re-visit.
Has somebody mentioned La Pampas (x2) in Clapham/ Battersea Rise? Great Argentinian restaurant, as good as the Gaucho. Reasonable wine list and some token rotisserie chicken for the non great-bloody-gobbets-of-red-meat eaters.
Oxfordshire: try 'Fallowfields Hotel', about 10 miles west of Oxford. Used to be the Begum Agha Khan's UK house: now a superb, classic French cuisine restaurant/hotel. Hawking in the gardens, real quality service (French staff). Not cheap, but one to a) impress the clothing off the bird, and b) give you an outstanding meal...
If you want seriously individualistic, and bloody good, but bloody pricey, try the Masons Arms in South Leigh, near Witney. Mad owner who told Michael Winner to piss off.. Has an HLS in the garden..

Seconded, however as a note of caution:
The rooms are great, the food very good and the wine list very acceptable. Had a great wedding anniversary, The_Duke now has an heir!
