Re: Welbeck... You know you want to!!
I've got mmates that applied went and came straight back to school at their first oppotunity! Can't say I've heard good things. Even the lads that stayed on say it was a mistake and that they should have gone for the scholarship like I did!!

Re: Welbeck... You know you want to!!
From what I've read here Welbeck from times long past seems very different to Welbeck four or five years ago. Welbexians too, for that matter.
And Welbeck now is very different to what it was four or five years ago. Out of date generalisations aren't at all helpful. And with that he picked up the bloody old towser by the scruff of the neck and, by Jesus, he near throttled him.

...but they are what make Arrse great! Next you'll be demanding that teeth arm officers refer to the RLC officers as "rounded individuals, of great character and military professionalism" rather than Yorkie noshing bloaters...Where will this tolerance end? Female Int Corps officer's weapon handling? Muslims? Danish cartoonists? I ask you...

I did not go to Welbeck, although I number several grads of that place, amongst my friends. The two I am thinking of particularly ,both distinguished themselves in Op Corporate and one became the Army's youngest brigadier. He now runs a US company, employing 6500 people.

Re: Welbeck... You know you want to!!
I did attend Welbeck (in its former location). I had a great time and carried on the motion at RMCS - unfortunately had too good a time and failed my first year. Did Rowallan in lieu of the remaining 2 years of a pain in the arrse degree. Got commissioned and am proud of being a "Hogwartian".
Just had a few moments reminiscing dorm raids/wrestling, initiation ceremonies, bomb making incidents, tunnelling, Geed bashing, weeders corner and nights out in Worksop for a "Pizza". :D

...all of which suggests we were probably in the same entry & house. Unless your ill behaviour was strictly passive.

To be fair, you are only 16 at the time. Admittedly, it doesn't really do to revel in such things years on, but you'd find much the same at any prep school and variations on the theme among first years in halls at university.

Prep school ends at the age of 14. Welbeck ends at the age of 18. I doubt that many University Freshers get excited about tunnelling and pizza nights in Worksop. However, it is clear that the education provided at Welbeck and the character building dorm wrestling more than justifies your lack of attendance at RCB!!

Post-14 public school then.

"Tunnelling" - not literally. The site is of considerable historic interest and in addition to the above ground stately home includes a vast network of tunnels, which were worth a look.

As for the RCB - a longstanding source of argument. In practice very few people actually went straight on to Sandhurst after A-Levels. Most went Rowco or RMCS then Rowco, by which time the Army had had about 3-5 years to have a look at you. I would think this duration of scrutiny was probably compensation for missing 3 days at Westbury.
Personally, I couldn't stand the place - but that's not to say it only deserves criticism.

Re: Welbeck... You know you want to!!
Lack of attendance at RCB! The Welbeck selection board takes place in Westbury and although shorter than the RCB proper does cover the vast majority of the same content. Follow that by 2 years at Welbeck being assessed further (people still fall by the wayside), and of course there's still exactly the same Commissioning Course to pass. At the end of the day if people, RCB attendees or not, are not good enough to get a commission they fail Sandhurst.

Re: Welbeck... You know you want to!!
I heared that only a third of Welbexians per entry actually get to and pass out of Sandhurst can anyone clarify that.

Also worth mentioning that attendees are 15/16 when doing the 2 day Welbeck RCB, takes more balls than you'd think.

Re: Welbeck... You know you want to!!
About a third is probably right. Loads of people fall by the wayside which was part of the reason for it changing. The old Welbeck has well and truly gone now.
