In the article is a reference to the "British" Royal Navy. Is there another navy in the world that does not feel the need to put the countries name in the title? The BBC should know better.

I think it's the BBC trying to sensationalise things. British v Spanish mood in the article.

Anyway, Spaniards sending an armed escort for fishing should be torpedoed! They are hypocrits considering they have enclaves on Morroccos mainland.

Spanish take obviously is a bit different, I read in the paper that the Guardia Civil reacted only once the Gibraltan Police were taking action against the fishermen. Therefore defensive only.
The problem is ostentensibly over the type of nets used which the Spanish say are acceptable due to one EU treaty the Gibraltans claim otherwise.

However the Spanish have a new government which is right wing and with the pig's ear they are making over the economy need to distract attention. This looks good.

The Minister of the Interior:
El ministro del Interior, Jorge Fernández Díaz, ha advertido este jueves de que España "no va a aceptar una política de hechos consumados" que suponga una "violación de la soberanía española" en las negociaciones para resolver el conflicto pesquero en aguas de Gibraltar.
Translation: The Minister of the Interior Jorge Fernandez Diaz warned this thursday that Spain will not accept a policy of fait acomplis that meant a violation of Spanish Sovereignty in the negotiations to resolve the fishing conflict in Gibraltan waters.

He also said that the Gibraltans had apologised, but that the boats would continue to be protected.

This incident may die down but this government will surely look for another way to keep the problem in the limelight. Remember I told you first.

Ahem.

The Royal Navy is the most senior navy in the world by virtue of being the oldest. Hence there is a Royal Netherlands Navy, a Royal Thai Navy and even a Royal Norwegian Navy.

But there's only one Royal Navy.

This also means that all other ships are obliged to "salute" by dipping their ensign when passing a Royal Navy warship. This only happened to me once when I was sailing in a tiny patrol boat and a massive Soviet merchant ship dipped its ensign. I think they were taking the piss.
