Re: How do you know when you are an old sweat?
Real example. Did Westbury last year and apart from the usual stuff of most of the girls having mothers who were younger than me and the accn SSgt laughing at there being "someone even older than me here" etc I think the Run was my "Old Sweat" moment. Try as I may, hard as I ran everyone else just legged it off into the distance effortlessly. I simply did not care, got me head down and ran until my heart was fit to explode. Colonel timing the race came over all "I see you are an Old Sweat as well" and said "Well done, not a bad time, bet you would have done much better in your younger days of course, we all slow down my dear".

When the Royal Family were still serving (the previous generation that is, not the ginger).

A few tours,
Plenty of time polishing the camps glass house (while living there),
Been able to recite a paragraph from the queens regulations at any given situation,
When the new guys look younger than your kids,
Last but not least has to be when youve demobbed <- you dont get to this without putting in the time.

Re: How do you know when you are an old sweat?
when both the units you done you basic training and trade training has now been taken over at blanford
If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probablly havent understood the seriousness of the situation.
You have to be 100%behind someone, before you can stab them in the back.

Re: How do you know when you are an old sweat?
Just thought of another one.
Every single unit you have ever served with has either been disbanded or moved camps.
Every unit I ever served at (9 at the last count) has either been disbanded or has moved barracks.
In my new job I spend quite a bit of time travelling around BFG and it is most peculiar going to one of the barracks where I spent 3 odd years and finding it turned into a housing estate.
Funny thing is the guardrooms are normally still there....-------------------------------------------------------------
Growing old is mandatory, growing wise is optional

When the first ship you ever joined, which was newly built, has just been decommissioned. :(
Another baleful milestone is coming up; within a year, there will be people joining up who weren't even born when I was pressed.... :(

You know you're getting old when you can still drink the sprogs under the table but you have to plan the sesh for the night before two days off, in order to recover.

Re: How do you know when you are an old sweat?
When talking about tours you have to affix which year it was. So you don't talk about the Bosnia tour, but the '95 Bosnia tour or the '97 Bosnia tour etc.
When you stop getting as many medals because every tour is a repeat.
When you return to visit your old Bn and recognise no-one but the CO and 2IC. And in the toilets the mess charicature you were last on is miles away down the wall, with about 10 later than it.
