Sadly, I just need to look in the mirror.

When you find a picture of yourself on your first NCO Cadre resplendent in Shirt KF, Lightweights, DMS & Puttees. There are no TRF patches on your uniform and a single new stripe SEWN on your right shirt sleeve.

^ I have that photo, sans stripe but with '58 webbing (with "pack, large, ridiculous"), tin helmet with "Dad's Army" scrim and of course armed with the ferocious Small Metal Gun. In the background is a canvass-topped AP short-wheel base land rover. I think this makes me older than I feel.
I am standing somewhere in Germany waiting for the Russians.
I can't wait to tell my grandkids about it one day, they'll think we were mad.

When you visit the National Army Museum, and your kit is in a glass case.
Had to go for a soothing pint after that.

Re: How do you know when you are an old sweat?
When sitting in the guard room, having the sprogs coming in to sign out, and showing you there ID card , and you realise one of them was born on exactly the same day as you only 10 years younger.
Starting stories, with , ' I remember when'
People asking telling you ,' you were in NI when the bombing were going on, Jesus you are old!!'If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probablly havent understood the seriousness of the situation.
You have to be 100%behind someone, before you can stab them in the back.

Ah yes, waiting for Russians was a popular task. I have a few of those type photos. Mainly involving "Penthouse" type tentage, a Clerks six foot folding table and a Gestetner duplicator.

Those were the days and yes, I am an "Old Sweat"
A Captain I worked for as a LCpl is now a Brigadier. A Major I worked for is now a General.
23 years and a 2Lt already. Accelerated promotion or what?
