Agreed!! I remember seeing the first bloke issued with it and thinking how:
    A) The hell someone was supposed to get on their belt buckle with it on.
    B) he looked like some sort of 80's popstar in desert DPM
    C) that I hoped I didn't get issued it....

Two weeks later we all got it, as usual very few normal size sets on issue, so.... the sets we had were so skin tight it was impossible to wear a long sleeved 95 shirt underneath, cue forearms the same colour as the local CIVPOP. Oh how it enhancing that beautiful squaddy tan!

Not good if you had limited room in the snatch and swapped top cover with someone else (a few hours with someone else's sweat wrapped firmly around you! mmmmmmm).
Totally agree. A couple of months after being issued with this madness (all small sizes, obviously) we had the pleasure of a visit from the Minister for Defence Procurement and (outside, 50 deg C) we got him dressed up in the most stinking set, gave him a chest rig, LMG, helmet then got him to take up a prone firing position. After chatting to the blokes for about 15 minutes and sweating like Eamon Holmes in a salad bar he went away promising to change it. Six months later or there abouts it got withdrawn. I spoke to one of the staff officers involved in its procurement. He told me it wasn't designed for people to wear outside of vehicles. I wish they had asked us on the ground first.
We had to wear our Elvis gear over our 95 shirts with the sleeves rolled down. When we asked why we were told,

"If an IED goes of next to you, having your sleeves rolled down will prevent flash burns to your arms."

"I think having 4 pounds of molten copper coming through the snatch at mach 2 around knee height would mean a bit of flashover would be the least of my worries, Sir."

    "Sarn't major, agi that man."

Still, after while you could roll the arms up and flatten the neck protector, making the whole thing useless.
"Duncan Ferguson elbowed me in the neck three times and I was beginning to get a bit angry. I swore at him in Austrian and I know he couldn't possibly have understood it. Even so, he suddenly swung round and thumped me in the stomach. He got sent off, but I began to appreciate how he earned his reputation as a hard man. It was a nice punch, I have to say."

Paul Scharner, Wigan player after being hit by Duncan Ferguson.

probably only the worst weapon if you do not look after it. in the armoured inf worldyou have to help feed the rounds into the gun as it is firing just llike a no2 on the gpmg. i have spent a whole 2 days firing on the range including on tours in hotter than normal weather and have not had a single stoppage. maybe it is just the luck of the draw who knows????

civvy kit is no better: drove a daf 85 a while back, 5 miles from delivery point the gearbox packs up, stuck in high range. not good when trying to move off, fully loaded, in 17th gear. rev tits off to delivery, unload and call fitter. just as he's about to start pulling up the deck to get at the gearbox he asks "any problem with the reversing lights?" spookily, i'd changed a bulb that very morning! goes to fusebox, changes fuse, gearbox ok. same fuse works reverse lights and range change! what a brilliant piece of brit design.....

No one has yet mentioned the BSA B40.

This 250cc beast powered from 0>60 in 7 months, - weighed more than a Dreadnought Battleship, - the kickstart had more recoil than an M110, (I tried kick starting mine one day and needed a rail warrant to get back). -

Rumour has it, one scrap bike supplied enough steel for 3 main Battle Tanks.

    Hello,

isn't DAF an American owned Dutch company, and doesn't the 85 have a German ZF gearbox?
