As a septic observer It is interesting to see the controversy over "national" anthems. Here in the US I have never heard of anyone wanting to sing any sort of state anthem. I think most states have some sort of state song and I would guess than 99% of the populace has no idea of what their state song is or what it sounds like. Even athletes from the bits of the US that once were independent nations such as Hawaii* or Texas don't go to events to claim the prizes in the name of their state but as members of the US team. The United Kingdom has existed as a nation for almost as long as the United States, being only 11 years younger that the US.

The only time I recall any problems in the US was in 1968 when a couple of athletes made a mockery of the medal ceremony. No sense getting divisive and mentioning their ethnicity but they were not on the swimming team.

*I would guess that perhaps the royal family would have problems with the US anthem. No one else would.

You don't have a political party actively trying to break up your Union
You don't have politicians actively trying to give away your sovereignty to foreigners.

Both are sore points for some of us

I understand. Our only concern is becoming the northern province of Mexico.

Agreed. I can't be bothered to respond to crap like that. It's all getting a bit monotonous now.

    Fixed that for you.

My understanding is that the United Kingdom as it exists today includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Ireland was not part of the United Kingdom until the the Act of Union of 1800. The 13 colonies joined as the United States with the ratification of the constitution in 1789. Of course Ireland became self governing in the 20's except for 6 of the 9 counties of Ulster.

Of course one could keep moving the goalposts and say that the US did not exist until Hawaii became a state in 1959.

The first Union was between Scotland and England leaving out Ireland, although it was still pretty tied to the larger Island and the Union benefited it greatly as Irreland could now get pref trading from Scotland too.

Your first Union, as you mention, was between 13 states only.

To be a fair the dates should be like for like, first union and then anysubsequent unions. Ours was 1707...
