We had to learn how to sing - it drowns out the whining from the neighbours!

and NO spell checker I will not spell neighbours the US way - even on the day we gave them freedom.

Their signatures were not worth much then really.

The whole thing wasn't about taxation, it was about property. With the french taken care of on the continent, the spanish a vague and distant threat, the monied americans turned their interests to the now open lands of the missouri valley, which the crown had promised to it's indian allies in the war against france. The first draft of the declaration had "the pursuit of property" in it, this was too close to the truth so "happiness" was inserted instead.

America started with opportunist land grabbers, treaty breakers and oath breakers. There has been little change since.

    Concur -
Long Island Iced Tea is vile. As to the differing opinions on here on iced tea: US restaurants sometimes use a machine that makes the iced tea by mixing powdered instant tea with water. That stuff is disgusting. Good restaurants and many people at home make proper iced tea by brewing pots of tea with good tea and chilling it. I have a 2l jug of iced tea in the fridge now made in a pot with a tea called PG tips. Quite nice on an 85F day like today.

In New England iced coffee is also popular but if you go to the south they look at you strangely if you ask for iced coffee. I prefer the tea anyway.

Fixed that. As to Hancock, historians differ and many feel he was fitted up on the smuggling charges due to his outspoken attitude on taxes. It seems harsh for being outspoken but probably was kinder and gentler than the current tactic of encouraging a walk in the woods with a small scout knife.

As to Cernunnos statement that every single signatory of the Declaration of Independence was an "oath breaker". Hancock had never served in the militia and never held colonial office so had never taken an oath to the Crown. Charles Carroll of Carrollton (Maryland) also never held any office or position under the Crown. He could not do so as the laws in effect prohibited him, as a Roman Catholic, from holding any office or commission. I am sure there are others but can't be bothered to waste time doing research on a beautiful 4th of July when a beach awaits my presence at the end of my street.

Thanks to those who offered good wishes for the Fourth.

I have little objection to the way the 13 colonies started off but the way they secured the other 38 was deplorable and for a bunch of farmers who didnt want to pay for their defense I think they messed it up somewhat.

the claims not to be empirical allways makes me laugh.

and congrats to will smith on his second term as president.

    too soon?.......

what the world needs is an enema, make that two - just to give it a sense of purpose.

US electoral democracy is just a structured system of legalised bribery.

a senior Chinese officer has said, “all the great nations in the world own aircraft carriers – they are symbols of a great nation”. That’s why China has just commissioned its first. By the same token, to opt for a “carrier gap” of some years is to abandon your responsibilities.

In fairness, they did pioneer the use of cheese as a salad garnish.
We need people who look to the stars, holding the nation and the world in their hearts but at the same time we need down-to-earth people who can do serious and trying work.

In a definite sense, a country's power and prestige isn't only a reflection of its economic power but also a reflection of its people's quality and morality. Moreover, I think the latter is actually more important in the long-term.
