I was in the UK for a week about 3 weeks ago and I heard about 2 of them.

'Nothing else matters'? - not even Ben and Jerry's Cookie Dough ice cream?

Most people I know would also say that they do it (whatever 'it' is) for their comrades and mates.

Unfortunately there are less of them about because you can't just throw a street party these days. You have to do a full risk and method statement and apply to the Council for a temporary through traffic prohibition as well as permission to congregate, because it is a public affair you need liability cover. Apart from all that no-one ever seems to get on with their neighbours these days!

On a serious note, the original subject was about the Oath of Allegiance. Without the Monarchy we'd still be swearing allegiance to the Head of State. It would be a simple substitution of words and the overall Oath would remain the same - Apart from the fact that, as an 'elected HoS' (and everyone knows that there's no way these elections could ever, ever be rigged) they'd be gone rather sooner than a reigning monarch (in most cases). In my opinion (which I'm sure is wrong and blinded by my belief in our system of Constitutional monarchy) this would potentially lead to greater chance of a schism within the Armed Forces as those who voted for the loser would then feel that they were working for "the wrong person".

The other option would be to swear allegiance to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, but if the jocks pull out it would then have to be sworn again / amended, as would be the case with any other hypothetical change in the makeup of the UK. Or to the flag and, as much as I'm a fan of flags, what with all their bright colours and pleasing geometry, swearing an Oath to an inanimate object just seems a bit shit.

Apologies if this has been said before but I really can't be bothered to read the whole thread as I'm sure it'll just make me want to murder Jabez with a bronze statuette of HM.
Hi Soggy 4978 - Thanks for taking the time to post!! Regrettably it appears that being a deferential subservient subject to royalty has corrupted your mind and your morals. A potential murderer? Surely not.Although we have differing views on this subject unlike you, I do not wish you harm in the slightest In fact I wish you well. Nevertheless - I think it is in order for me to state: "PEACE BE WITH YOU MY SON".

You haven't exactly come up with a decent counter argument though, have you?

And don't call me "son". I find the very possibility of the merest speculation of suggestion that I may be related to you horrendously offensive.
