Are you sure? The number of rounds fired during the Iranian Embassy seige was never an issue. The information that a target was shot after the fact - unarmed and walking down the stairs with the hostages did not enter the public domain until years later.
However the number of rounds fired at the IRA team in Gibraltar was the subject of conjecture and criticsm. Chiefly the issue was raised in the documentary 'Death on The Rock. Hence the Private Eye joke.
Unless of course the cartoon was based on a comment made by one of the CRW team in the embassy, which is possible I concede.Last edited by bigeye; 29-04-2012 at 14:51.

And, please don't be all arrogant and look down on me because I was not able to join the Army. Joining as a REME/RE officer was the first thing on my mind when I graduated from uni as an engineer. Sadly I have lower back pain and eczema so it wasn't happening.
So I have to rely on people who've been there and done that to learn about the soldiering aspects of any inventions I come up with, or any other aspects other than the technical which is my strength. We may not agree on everything but we are on the same side. Perhaps something for you to keep in mind before you add more scorn to your posts.

What's this? 'johnny come latelys' turning up and abusing established members... not only that they are plod!
Seriously though, I think IndyBoff did raise a good point regarding ID. With regards to warrant cards I've seen a few in the past but I wouldn't able to spot a fake one.

I thought the term 'I ran out of rounds' came from a documentry made about Op Nimrod in around the late 80s. The bloke who brassed up the 'pot-bomber' was intervied (in the dark) and teh question was posed... to which he answerd the immortal phrase.
Given the concern over the 'liquising' rather than 'liquidating' of the terrorists on the rock I think any Trooper making such a statment in the enquiry in to Op Flavious would be... ill advised.
I am pretty sure that the comment was made about Nimrod, but Private Eye has transposed it on to Flavious... the picture is of blokes in a 'Nimmrod' style pose.

So the joke was based on the comments made by one of the Nimrod team butis supposed to refer to the Op Flavious enquiry. The PE art department just used the first photo they could find that looked like the SAS - which as you say appears to be a CRW team preparing for a Nimrod style breach.

They don't have shoulder numbers up for the same reason SF wouldn't. To avoid ID.
What's the point of having a balaclava on whilst having shoulder numbers up when another day you might be working without a balaclava and have the same numbers up- people would then see your face.
Instead, on ops like these, officers often have a specific-to-each-op number eg No1 for this Op is John Smith, Number 2 is Dave etc etc. they will often have this number displayedpain heals, chicks dig scars, and glory lasts forever!!!!
