He received a Military Cross, and at the age of twenty-one became the youngest brigade-major in the British Army. When he enlisted as a Private I believe he was also a Professor .... perhaps overqualified .... and IIRC the youngest Brigadier in the army at the time he was promoted to that rank .

Yes, he neevr served on the front line, he was staff officer.
