I did not care for Greene King on draught in the club bar, so crossed Egware Road, took the first left and made The Carpenter's Arms my local. There's a second pub on the same street; both are (were) excellent.

I had to wait hours for my room, despite only arriving at 11am, then the room was a twin and not a double & didn't have a shower. I'd always used UJC before and always have since.

forget the 'Im a squaddie so I must stay in a squaddie club' bollox, get on the United Kingdom Hotels | Cheap UK Hotel Deals | Hotwire UK website, type in the area you want to stay and the dates, press go and choose a hotel. I stayed at the Intercontinental ( ???title.Hotel.Description.Overview.New??? ) on Park Lane last month for £55 quid. Hotel and room were fantastic and not a pissed up squaddie/fireman/ambulance driver in sight.
Also stayed at the London Hilton through this site for £100 2 weeks ago.Last edited by Filbert Fox; 28-10-2011 at 22:55.

I stayed in the UJC this week and will be again next. No dramas with the place, went for the basic package so had the shared washroom. Fot what i paid for, which was fine by me. Only complaint was that the window overlooked the Waterloo train oine, so had those clanking things going by until late hours. So i shut the window.
"What kind of Terrorist are you?"
"I am a terrifying....Terrorist... Are you scared?"
"No.."
"God dammit! Oh, err, i mean Allah dammit..."
"so where did you train to be a terrorist?"
"At the Suicide Bomber facility"
"Oh really? Nice Place?"
"It was..."
"Why, what happened"
"New guy...."

The only thing the UJC is good for these days is if you have to get up at really early o'clock to get a train from waterloo, its not cheap any more and its open to just about anyone these days who wears what is loosely described as a uniform and getting a room is not easy because of this and the VSC is a dive. Get out of the must stop at a military themed club mentality, the internet is full of cheap deal sites, hotels will almost give away rooms rather than have them empty and the hotels are top quality.
I spent years staying at the UJC whenever I was in London, its great if you like looking at the pictures and reading names on the VC wall, but you can do that by just nipping in for a drink if youre in the area.

For functions my Corps Association changed from VSC to UJC a few years agao, reason was cost.
I've stayed at UJC quite a few times but now I tend to look at what's available & if I want to just use the UJC bar.
As FF says staying at an Intercontinental can be very cost effective, I stay in them all over and never pay rack rate. As more hotel are using room rates these days though for a single person UJC can be a better dealI write down everything I want to remember. That way, instead of spending a lot of time trying to remember what it is I wrote down, I spend the time looking for the paper I wrote it down on.
