Yes he's looking at the birds' nest above the front door, and no, it's not my cat. He just thinks he is.
More like you are his human.
I didn't say it was your fucking fault, I said I was blaming you.

Just a quick update on Sooty (who, if you remember, adopted us a few months ago).

She is now totally integrated herself into the family and now demands to be let out last thing at night to chase mices, rats (we live in the country), assorted dogs and ducks or anything else that tickles her fancy. At first she would only stay out for a few minutes, but as daylight is getting longer she is staying out longer, to the point that she can be out for over an hour. This causes some distress to the LHCO.

Just yesterday we were sitting on the patio getting some rays when she sauntered over to the gap between the patio flags to try to see the mice that sometimes collect the bird seed which falls through the gap. For a while she stood there with her paws down the hole when suddenly she jerked back and lo and behold she held a mouse in her paws. Swiftly transferring it to her mouth she was then chased around the garden a la Bennie Hill style by the LHCO, who was trying to "save the mouse".

Sadly the mouse popped his clogs (!).

Anyway, just prior to that I took the following photo of Sooty trying to merge into the background in an attempt to make herself invisible to the mice:

    Shape, shine and shadow FFS!

Don't you teach your cats anything?

She's got the shadow bit squared away, but tell her to get some twigs in her ears and a length of black nasty over those eyes.

All on this thread seem to share a concern about animal cruelty. There is another reason to get tough on animal cruelty. The offenders graduate to bigger things. About 6 months ago there was a furor in the UK about someone who posted videos of drowning a kitten and of feeding a tiny kitten to a python. The suspect in that case, Luka Magnotta, has apparently moved on. He is now apparently the prime suspect in a murder in Montreal. The torso was found in Montreal, a foot was sent to the Conservative Party HQ, a hand to the Liberal HQ. (I would guess that the NDP HQ and Bloc HQ staff are dreading the morning mail). Links below that show what animal cruelty can lead too:

FBI Behavioural Science Unit refers to it as The Homicide Triad.

Firesetting, Bedwetting and Cruelty to Animals are present in an above average sample of serial sex and homicide offenders they interviewed in the studies that created Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (VICAP-the thing that Silence of the Lambs was based on). Robert Ressler and John Douglas have wrote a series of books about their experiences (sadly plenty of detail to keep you awake at night).

It is also present in an alarming number of serious domestic violence suspects, to the extent that as standard if cops get called to a domestic on the risk level questionaire they ask there is the "Does the suspect harm animals" question.

It often gets treated flippantly; but two rapists I have dealt with had youth convictions for cruelty to animals. One for severe violence and the other sexually violated the animal and then mutilated to an degree whilst alive, then slit its throat. Dangerous and psychologically disturbed men (but the judge thinks a sex offenders course in prison will sort it out!?)

I once had the pleasure of a long chat with a Rifles WO2 about the subject of Horse Ripping (ie, mutilating horses). Once he found I was being serious, he told me about a serious of attacks on horses that followed his unit. To the extent that a great deal of time was spent to identify the suspect, but no charges were ever brought.

Hampshire Police, if I remember rightly, co-ordinate the national UK Profiling of horse mutilation which is still a problem. Not the sad tormenting of animals which goes on, but a grim compulsion to attack them in ritual manner which (in my uneducated opinion) can only come from a warped and probably sexual drive.

When I started discussing the experiences that investigations have produced we had a nice long chat, and then the people around us started to want to leave the loons to themselves.

Those cleverer than my can probably give a good psychological explanation around power/control and sexual violence, spilling out to abuse of animals. I just am saying what I have seen.

    Sad but true.

Anyway, now I've depressed you all, I'll be off. Evening all.

Many psychopaths, rapists and serial killers start by torturing and killing animals when they are children and progress onto humans when the "thrill" of harming animals diminishes.

Cats are just gay dogs that don't really like you.
I loved the training. All we had to do was bayonet sacks full of straw. Even I could do that. I remember saying to my mum...."These sacks'll be easy to outwit in a battle situation"
