    13. Probably to represent the original 13 colonies, that are represented on the current USA flag by 13 alternating stripes of red and white. There are also 50 stars on the current USA flag to represent the current 50 States.


    And I didn't cheat, I learnt this in A-Level Politics & Government, when we studied the the USA and the creation of it's democratic process. It's one of the only things I actually still remember from it.
