Just come up with an interesting one from another thread:

Which incident prompted Eire to declare itself a Republic in 1948?

Nah, Philistine origins are traced to the arrival as conquerors of a group of people on the coast of modern Israel and Gaza. They were culturally related to the Mycenean or proto-Greek world and came from a point of origin in the Aegean thought by most scholars to have been Crete. They conquered the local Caananite western-Semitic speaking population of the coast, and together the conquered people and the invaders created a blended, west-Semitic speaking culture that we call Philistine.

Was it something to do with getting the Brits out of the 'Treaty Ports'?

Something to do with the unrest in postwar Greece?
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up,

As true today as in 1320.

Nope to both of those. It's a bit obscure so Google hunting is permissible on this one! :D

Because the new Taoiseach, Costello, was offended by artifacts from N Ireland were placed before him at an official dinner in canada

I remember from college that it was something to do with a toast in favour of King George or something like that.
The Irish were teetering on independency, but at some dinner, a toast was declared, and the Irish leader went mental......
It's all i remember about from the potato famine.....
