I had mine chemically dipped some time ago. its meant to stop tarnishing.
I dinged the back of one of them by accident, made a small mark on the back but now it seems it eating the metal, not much but, eaten it, it has.
I took the whole lot to a jewelers, (whos also a Metallurgist) hes said the chemical has reacted with the zinc coating (Rhodesia Medal in this case), and its a no hoper, he says in a few years time all will be left is the ribbon (wasnt to happy to hear that)
Two choices, leave it, or get a replacement (now only worn once a year)
Anyone had similar problems? and /or is a replacement from someone in Soldier mag the way ahead.
Just to add and if i get a replacement, can I get them restamped as I know its all done by laser these days but my others are all stamped
I have found that cheaply mounted medals look just that-cheap. I have just had mine done my Raymond Holdich, not cheap but beautifully done.
If that is Raymond Holditch in Whitehall, he isn't there anymore. It's now run by someone else who done a shite job on mine the other day and wasn't cheap either.

I think he's referring to http://www.rdhmedals.com/ - Raymond D Holdich (no 't') based near Southend. I have just had mine done for Remembrance - they are none too bad. If I have any issue, he has used black thread to tie down the court mounting - I thought the SOP was "neutral colour"? Certainly, the miniatures I had done through my tailor use an off-white, which is less obvious.
Google shows a "Raymond D Holditch" as well, 7 Whitcomb Street.

If you actually have a damaged gong and can return it (or a stolen one with a police report), the MOD Medal Office may issue you a replacement at charge (or even for free, unless you are an officer.) No idea whether this is cheaper than going through one of the medal dealers.
Don't leave it until October to get your medals done for Remembrance Day. Medal Mounters will be inundated and some will let standards slip for the sake of speed, it's human nature

Medal mounting walt?
It's the Holditch on Whitcombe street I was refering to, next to the National Gallery. It's now called The Chealsea Military Antiques. They do £10 per medal, mine came back with the ribbon on one slanted and looks out on sync with the rest.
