Flippancy is good, its like cheap sarcasm.

Are you stupid? Posting drivel such as this on an Army oriented website.

If you served you would understand that the cost is irrelevant and it is indeed nothing to compare with other nations medals.

Some of you might be aware that in the late 60s early 70s there was talk of awarding what was talked of being called "The Army Medal",to be awarded for a period of 7 years, and not being linked to "Good Conduct" however this was knocked back as being too expensive by the then "Liarber" government.
Also at this time there was talk of bringing the Army's LS&GC into line with the other services,by having to do 15 years instead of the 18 it then was,the same for the MSM down from 27 years to 21.It took a few years for them to do this i notice.

VRSM is a post nominal? f**k that, I don't want people thinking I'm a coffin dodger!
Your not, dont worry I remember seeing someone get his VRSM 3rd bar in 2006.

its was some sort of bloody long service medal then although the guy was in his 60's, and still in the TA. Before you cry WAHHHHHHHHH, why would I make one so obvious, and It may have been a second bar but he definately already had one bar, possibly two on it, didnt really pay much attention.

It is harder than ever to qualify for the ACSM now. A soldier would have to complete 7 tours of Afghanistan. 2 year NI tours are a thing of the past.
I would've thought that a 2 year tour in NI was the norm right now, if not longer. The issue is whether these tours still qualify for the GSM 1962 and therefore the ACSM - I don't know (although Antrim would suggest that they certainly should).

This is close to my heart - I only have to clock up another 20 odd days service to get a bar to my ACSM but somehow I don't think it'll happen

Third Bar... if traded in EM(T) and used bars. only equals 25 years. If I'd opted for the VRSM instead of continuing with EM(T) i would be due mine now (third bar), so not impossible.

A 2 year tour is the norm, however time there doesn't qualify you for the ACSM as no GSM is awarded.

So 2 year tours aren't a thing of the past, they just don't qualify for a GSM? Pretty rum for those two lads that were killed in Antrim eh?

I could in fact have the chance of a two year tour in NI tomorrow if I wanted to run for the job - not sure I could face the weekend commute though :(

You know sometimes LESS is MORE!

By that i mean that sometimes a few medals being worn,is sometimes more impressive than a long rack.

The more commemorative medals being worn, the more it seems to devalue the genuine ones earned.

If you've earnt the medals issued, why the hell would you want to water them down with some other peace of crap that does'nt really have any story or background to it?

I know people who wear just a single GSM/or GSM & SAM.I know others who have at least 3 medals (all issued),that have never done a tour or fired a shot in anger.

Both of those medals i mentioned are worth ten times any commemerative bling.
