Do unto others !!!!
There are blokes with 8 medals or more who have never fired a shot in anger. Doesn't mean they haven't earnt them. I suppose it depends on what line of work they are in.
i can kind of see both sides of the fence in regards to medals, on one hand you get someone who has a lengthy career an gets out with no medals. He goes onto buy some bling medals as all the gents that he is marching with, on remembrance day, have a good chest full. This gets him stick and called a walt. Then you get members of the TA, myself included, who get a vrsm for getting 10 bounties, yet you get someone who has a reggie entry as a tom an then goes on to complete his 22 an gets fook all.
Take korea, you were allowed to wear the UN medal and the issue one yet nowadays you cant wear the nato afghan one.
Other commonwealth nations wear defence medals, jasa pingat, and have permission of big liz. we on the other hand get fook all
I think the whole system needs a shake up. Anyway i digress back to future medals.
I can only see limited ops as we are on our chinstraps financially, as mentioned the diamond jubilee medal and maybe a coronation medal, not overly fussed about them, to be fair i'd probably get them mounted just to annoy the ssiite out my old man (hes still bitter about not getting the battle of jubillee gong)
Agreed. I'm not front line, but I still shudder when I think back to the memory of what each tour provided in the way of thrills, spills and bloody hard graft.Originally Posted by Fallschirmjager

Somekind of long service medals. He's a nice enough bloke, but even he does'nt rate them much.Originally Posted by Fallschirmjager
I don't go out of my way to try to improve my medal quota, but the more will always be the merrier in my eyes (until it's time to mount them again, that is). I welcome the prospect of a coronation/diamond jubilee medal, but I wouldn't be too arsed if they reverted to the old CO/RSM/Junior Tom method of allocation.Originally Posted by DAKOTA_STAB

Well he is our colonel and chief, and has got the beers in during annual mess dinner...and cigars during the christmas stints on tour (he sends all snrs of his Regiments gifts on tour over xmas). I have met him on several occasions including the presenting of my LS&GC (30 min private session).
That's awesome, nice one.Originally Posted by blobmeister

OK - you could crack a SJM, an LS&GC and a GJM with no tours at all. But you'd have to be quite old to be serving now.Originally Posted by Fallschirmjager
I could see the German troops outside the gun emplacements, presumably others were in the casemates. With infinite pains I took up my revolver, aimed carefully at the nearest German and pulled the trigger. The bullet went straight though my left foot.

Hmmm. Not all residential tours in 'Slipper City' were 'cushty' you know.Originally Posted by skintboymike

I'll bet there are - you just give up the MBE if you get an OBE and move up the 'order' don't you? You certainly wouldn't put MBE, OBE after your name. Or even OBE, MBE, or any other random order of O,B.E and M.Originally Posted by CAARPS

I heard a rumour many moons ago that they were on about doing a gong for being on Op Fresco! Anyone hear of it? More importantly can l have mine please!
War Department notice:- If in doubt, brew up!
And while I am at it, in my mind the ACSM was set up for a outstanding reasons, i.e to recognise soldiers who had spent extended periods on operations, however, quickly became a Northern Ireland residential medal.Originally Posted by CAARPS
Not that I am trying to sound too churlish but there is a big difference between an Op Tour and a man who can return to his block/home and family every night and still qualify for a medal (Usually, like everything there are exceptions)
It would be very interesting to see how many lads actually have the ACSM that have not done the NI residential bit (and huge respect to them).
