    Re: Insulting America

This thread has gone on for long enough. DD simply made it as an anouncement that this sort of flaming was detrimental to the Multinational HQ, and I happen to agree. Users like Virgil are hardly around anymore, and only the ones who are most dedicated to arguing are left. It's simply turned into the NAAFI minus the humour.

Expat71 don't try to tell morons like dogface that the British had other things to do other than Vietnam. They actually do whinge alot that we weren't there in any numbers.

Although you could point out that we won a war that was very similar to Vietnam, against commies at about the same time. Although admittedly we didn't do it through massive firepower and don't feel the need to make lots of films about it.

    Guess where it was....

    Are you speaking of Malaysia?

Have you considered the record of counter insurgency campaigns where the borders are secured vs those where they are not? Malaysia vs Vietnam for instance?

As I recall the borders in Malaysia, were secure during the UKs operations there. This makes a vast difference in the conduct of and/or being able to win this type of war.

Take a long look at all the borders around the country of Vietnam, during the Americas war in that country, none were secure and all were a problem.

Should we talk about the UK's operations against the Mau Mau in Kenya? Did the UK win that one?

Give you an inch and you take a mile.

Not really much point in discussing things with people like you.

Not those who fought in General Slim's Fourteenth Army - the ones who had been fighting the Japanese since December 8 1941.

Nor the survivors of the 130,000 British,Australian and Indian troops who went into captivity with the fall of Singapore.

Or have you considered that it might not have been pourous boarders, but the US forces habitual slaughter of innocent people that may have driven people to support the insurgents.....still no concept of hearts and minds

Did the UK win that one? Yes, the insurgency was crushed with law & order restored to make way for Kenyan independence.

Imperial Reckoning: The Untold Story of Britain’s Gulag in Kenya, as the author comments, is based on oral history forty years after the event.

No doubt a similar book could be put together based on Vietnamese oral history.
