Re: The Invasion of Cyprus
I was there in 60's. Wasn't a lot of fun. Went back in 70's with Unficyp, based at a camp outside of Limassol. We had outposts in Paphos and other places. Ayaia napa was about 6 mud huts at the time. Paphos had nowt, except the pelican restaraunt. Biggest bugbear was saluting anything vaguely UN coloured. We almost had to present arms to the Med![/quote]
I was there in 1960 at Karalaos Camp just North of Famagusta. (Att 42 Fld regt RA) when Cyprus got it's independence we moved to the SBA at Dhekelia, at first we were in tents on the Pyla Road but later moved into Slim Barracks .

During Un tour we were able to go anywhere, and on a weeks local leave four of us went out in two cars and toured. Went to Fama G and to Kyrenis. Lovely places.
At one point during frst tour, we were at Larnaca. I went back there 3 years ago. Not changed that much, and the Copper Kettle pub was still there. But sadly , Androula wasn't!I don't feel old. I don't feel anything until noon.

Re: The Invasion of Cyprus
From a different perspective:
I was living there as a Pads Brat during the invasion. We lived in MQs at RAF Akrotiri at the time and I remember we didn't see much of my Dad for some time.
Since we were accommodated on camp we had to have several families living with us whilst things calmed down enough for them to fly out. It was a tad bit cramped and noisy, but we all got on with it and had to share provisions with the neighbours.
As a kid, it was rather exciting seeing all the movement around the camp, but of course I had no idea of what was going on outside the wire. Ignorance, sometimes, is bliss!Never regret anything that once made you smile.

Re: The Invasion of Cyprus
....Just to add to all above, a composite Coy of 4(V) RGJ were on the Island at the time having their annual camp - Wisely all confined to camp during the invasion.
I went there with 2 RGJ 4 years later and tried to arrange a visit to a refugee camp to slip some dosh to the families of some of my greek cypriots friends from London - refused by the powers that be of course, apparently handing out a fiver or two would have caused some terrible chaos...yeah right.
Many years later, i stayed with the family of one of my turkish cypriots frIends on the Northern side near Boas (just up from Famagusta) and they just wanted the turkish 'settlers' to feck off back so they could all be just plain old Cypriots again.
