The version I remember was '.....he was hanging off his chin-strap' meaning completely ball-bagged.

    Edit: wot Spaz said.

    On his chinstrap.

I'd always thought of it as being so flat out that your chin strap was resting on the ground. Either would mean much the same.

Or alongside Royal, more correctly, "threadbare" = worn-out, tired of a situation, ie threaders with it.

Harry Black is my favourite though and for a long time, it appeared to be holding the Army together. Post SDR it may yet have a resurgance.

"Baltic" or "blu-ers" also amused me, particularly when the bit of oggin concerned was neither The Baltic nor blue.

In the 50s in the RN, Screech was a mixture of Marsovin (a weird sort of Maltese chemical wine) and Coca Cola.
Dr Johnson: 'Any man thinks less of himself for not having been a soldier, or not having been to sea.'

Thiomas Babington Macaulay, quoted by Admiral of the Fleet Lord Fisher of Kilverstone: 'Moderation in war is imbecility!'

Douglas MacArthur: 'There is no substitute for Victory!'

Ulu dates from the Malaya Campaign. Means Jungle or just generally country in Malay.

Gat comes from hte popular low powered air pistol of the same name.

Not forgetting bundook, (variously bondook etc) from the Swahili Bunduki, itself derived from Urdu I am told, presumably via Indian traders in days of Empire

Also in the 90's was Weaponhead for someone who was just a little too genned up on kit and what was what in various arms (ours and the Fantasian forces).

We had a chap in the platoon at RMAS who went by a very unfortunate name (McS****** - joined the RRF for a clue...) which got a lot of the Jock CSgts flying off the handle. He was a bit of a spotter (another name for the same above) and so was known as McWeaponhead.
The term bugle originates from the French word bugleret, which was derived from the Latin buculus, meaning young bull.

I can assure, that it was still the same in the 60's and 70's.

There was a place at the top of The Gut,that would send a crate of Marsovin back to the UK,for a very reasonable sum!
