    Nope, it's only two colour and the darker patches are too big.

    See this month's "Soldier" for a clear picture of the snipers wearing the new helmets.

    A tale from 1970s Northern Ireland, and of dealing with petrol bombs... (I vaguely remember this story from when I was a brat, so feel free to treat it as completely untrustworthy).

    There were cries for fireproof suits to protect the poor sods on the baseline, so it was decided to test the effectiveness of the 1970s-vintage combat suit, in all of its lined cotton glory, with and woolly layers and shirts hairy. A combat suit has a pint of petrol poured over it, and is set alight and extinguished with CO2 after thirty seconds (a hopefully realistic period by which your mates should have smothered the flames). The inside of the inside lining hasn't charred. They relight it for another thirty seconds. Still no burn-through - this eventually takes 90 seconds or so, and it's reckoned that the cotton is acting like a wick; the flame is burning away from the suit. The advantage of the F1 suit only comes if you haven't got a mate near you with a fire extinguisher.

    IIRC, someone in NITAT(G) did trial the fireproofing of the woolly jumper, by attempting to throw a petrol-bomb overhand while standing in a doorframe. Think about it. Instead, he got to discover that Paderborn hospital had a Europe-leading burns unit, and was lucky to end up with only a few scars to show after an appearance as a human torch...
    I was very surprised that the new combats are polycotton for this very reason. I've avoided setting fire to mine though :D

    Been a while since I did PO hence asking about the visor and clips.
    Well, the prodigal brother. When did you get back? Ain't seen you since the surrender. Come to think of it, I didn't see you at the surrender.

    I don't believe in surrenders. Nope, I've still got my saber, Reverend. Didn't beat it into no plowshare, neither

    Theres a whole range of different helmet covers in this months Soldier mag.

    Is it a genuine problem as in the standard issue helmet cover not fit, or is it just the 'new look' to have?

    I know the early UN helmet covers in Bosnia didn't fit and made you look like a blue mushroom.

    The Red Sea Pedestrians in the IDF do this deliberately to break up their outline.

    The hat—called a mitznefet in Hebrew—attaches to a regular combat helmet and obscures its rigid, round shape. As the mitznefet flops about, it takes on an irregular form that’s harder to recognize in a shadow or out of the corner of your eye. The hat also protects against the sun and the moon, which might reflect off the surface of the helmet. A standard mitznefet consists of reversible mesh fabric, with a greenish woodland camouflage print on one side and a brown desert print on the other…

    What does the word mitznefet mean? One common translation is "clown hat," but the term has some more dignified connotations. The biblical Book of Exodus uses mitznefet to describe the ancient headgear of the Jewish high priests. As such, the word has been translated as "mitre" or "headdress." But some biblical scholars think mitznefet comes from the root "to wrap," and say that a better translation would be "turban."

    You do look a bit like the Swedish Chef, though.

    BTW, if you need to you can easily make your own kit fire retardant, the downside it that is washes out and needs to be re-applied.

    Things You'll Need:

    * Large bucket
    * 1 gallon hot water
    * 4 ounces of alum
    * 9 ounces of borax
    * Stir stick
    * Clean fabric
    * Rubber gloves
    * Dryer

    Step 1
    Pour the hot water into the bucket. The bucket needs to be large enough to hold all of the fabric and solution.

    Step 2
    Measure and add both the alum and the borax to the hot water. Stir gently with the stir stick until the alum and borax are dissolved.

    Step 3
    Immerse the fabric in the bucket of fire-resistant solution. Push the fabric gently under the water until it is completely soaked. Let the fabric soak overnight.

    Step 4
    Put the rubber gloves on your hands because the solution can cause skin irritation. Wring the solution out of the fabric.

    Step 5
    Place the fabric in the dryer and run it on the cool setting until the fabric is completely dry.

    I think the doznotfit cover is actually a very good idea. "Why things are seen",. etc.
