surely getting wider would make this worse? Also, I've got an unhelpfully broad forefoot which complicates matters.

The fundamental problem I reckon is sliding forward in the boot so I don't think that getting a wider fit will help

Get to Richmond & get some Altbergs fitted properly. Explain the problem & they will sort it. There is one bloke there who is a genius. Sussed my super wide plates problem as soon as he clocked my trotters.
I went a while ago & it was more than worth the 180mile round trip to at last find a perfect fitting boot. Took about 6 weeks for them to be posted but they are like butter now. Only used for civvy tabbing these days but i beast myself a wee bit in a pride sort of way. I've got Peacemakers P2's & they are great. Top notch customer service from the Yorkshire people too.

The issue Combat Assault Boots were mainly ok for me but has the problem been sorted out with the soles and heel " crumbling " ??? Are the current issue Assault Boots made with a stronger and more durable heel and soul material ?

I always found the old Australian Army issue boots shit. However, alot can be improved with a decent inner sole, in terms of protecting ankles and tendons from strain. And costs a fraction of the price... Also, if the boots get knackered and ya need new ones, just pull out the insert and and put it in ya new ones. Orthaheel make some good ones.

Lowa Mountain GTX. I'd get some Meindl MFS next time round though. Not cos the Lowa are kack, just the Meindls are better. Its the Ferrari or Porsche difference.

Would German Army Issue Para Boots be ok as a Field / Exercise Boot ? I also hear the German Army Issue Mountain Boot is also a good boot ?
