Well, the prodigal brother. When did you get back? Ain't seen you since the surrender. Come to think of it, I didn't see you at the surrender.

I don't believe in surrenders. Nope, I've still got my saber, Reverend. Didn't beat it into no plowshare, neither

Right so Altbergs are in the post, has anyone read this article about polish? I've always used Kiwi obviously but this advises not to. Is it a pile of cr4p or sound advice?
Jarrod, I had a pair of MTM RM Williams elastic-sided roohides which I spit-polished with Kiwi...they ended up nearly rigid; either polish buildup, the solvents drying the leather or, probably, both. RMW water-based polish (if you can get it) is easily the best I've used.

For any good boots-especially Altbergs-I would do as they suggest!

Right, I'm tempted by some gucci new Altberg Jungle boots with some sealskin socks come payday.

    Questions are;

Are they any good for tabbing in? (both boots and socks)

Considering they'll be used 'up north', are they going to be warm or will I lose toes on stag?

    Answers on a postcard please...

Is this a wah? They are called Junglies for a reason and have great big drainage holes in the side of them which will let water in as well as out! Minimal ankle support too so I wouldn't recommend them for any hard going terrain.

For junglies, if you don't get issued them then don't wear them or it makes you a jungle walt! Those who have been issued tend to only wear them around camp in this country or perhaps on exercise in the height of summer.

You don't tab in Sealskinz - you put them on over dry socks when the inside of the boot is wet. This helps dry out the boot whilst keeping your feet dry. If you tab wearing the socks then your feet will sweat and blister!

No wah. I want a lightweight boot that I won't sweat in (unlike the Goretex peacekeepers I currently have) around the TAC and for summer exercises.
I was also wondering if the sealskinz socks will help because as Brecon demonstrated, once Goretex boots are wet...they don't dry.

As for the walt comment...have a word with yourself. Many, many blokes use jungle style boots around the TAC and camps because they are apparently lightweight and comfortable.

I would suggest non-gortex Peacekeepers for a lightweight boot for CFT's and for work around camp. For a pure CFT tool you might want to look at the 'sneakers', but for proper tabbing and exercises they don't seem to offer much in the way of insulation and support. And they wear out sharpish.

Danke. I have the Goretex peacekeepers at the moment and while they're the dogs danglies, they are a bit too toasty on 10 milers.

Jungleism, I've worn US issue Panama soled j-boots in most Australian conditions, and have found that shock-absorbing 'Sorbothane' type insoles are a must, as the sole is quite thin, and you'll risk tendonitis otherwise.

I've read of people not wearing socks in tropical climates to reduce heat oedema, but I haven't tried it.

Goretex boots are tonk other than stagging on in wet, baltic conditions. Stay away from them as SCBC demonstrated to you.

My comment about being a jungle walt applies to my previous regular infantry battalion and others I've seen/spoken to. I don't know how you do things in your TA Bn.

I use Sealskinz if the inside of the boot is wet and I put fresh socks on. It dries the inside out while keeping your feet dry. Obviously if you have Goretex boots on then you're fcuked.

I use Altberg Sneekers as camp boots and for summer/FISH exercises. They come highly recommended for these uses.

Had a play with some Altberg junglies today and while they were nice, I couldn't kneel without the laces cutting into my upper foot arches....probably me being a mong and lacing them incorrectly.

The owner of Altberg was mooching about and said that they'd recently redesigned the junglie because the previous model didn't have enough depth in the tread (they've got HUGE soles now, but still very light). Apparently a jungle warfare instructor had complained about his pig-on-ice routine in some mud in front of amused locals who were wearing yellow wellies. :D

Just my ten pence, if the boots are just for mooching about camp or green pt then sneekers are good. I don't really see the benefit in Altberg jungles over sneekers, as far as I can see it's just a minimal saving in weight for less ankle support. I haven't been to the jungle, so about that I cannot comment.

    Re: Best boots (tabbing, etc.)

I always used to swear by the Altberg Patrols, had them for 5 years and always did the business for me.

But just looked on the Altberg website and they no longer make them so obviously not many other people felt the same.

As well as these, had a pair of AKU civvy walking boots dyed black that I always rated.

With regards jungle boots, can't see any other use for them other than mincing around in barracks or actually in the jungle. Maybe a boot run without kit but I wouldn't want to go anywhere with kit on in them. Can remember reading some book about the Falklands by some old Para Reg bod though in which he (to the disbelief of everyone else) went on Op Corporate in his; his reasoning being boots are going to get wet regardless so you might as well have a pair that dry quicker.

They can and will make any of the boots that they have manufactured in the past. You just need to ask tham.

Jungleism- If the jungle boot eyelets are digging in, but apart from that you feel they are comfortable, they can put additional padding into the tongue for you.
