Re: National Defence Medal (NDM)
The NDM would cover many issues including the NI conflict and the Cold War threat... maybe you should read the report if you aren't sure what it is actually about. You can download it from the NDM website as I did.

What did you make of the report? Honestly

Re: National Defence Medal (NDM)
If there was ever a reason why the NDM should never, ever be issued, then this thread is it....

Re: National Defence Medal (NDM)
Long winded, well thought out and presented, but flawed for all the reasons stated previously. I still think it is a vanity award, being sought by those who attend Remembrance services who are jealous that others have medals and they don't.

Re: National Defence Medal (NDM)
I have a capbadge, a blazer badge and a veterans badge. The addition of a NDM would only serve to confirm to other veterans the fact that I was never called upon to do anything out of the ordinary.
In the eyes of the general public however, the wearing of the medal might hint at acts of gallantry. I would therefore not be comfortable wearing such an award.

Re: National Defence Medal (NDM)
Sorry but it's NOT a medal and isn't awarded to the serviceman or women killed. It is an 'emblem' soley for the Next of Kin. It doesn't recognise or honour the service of the victim, only the loss by the family. It has been used in other commonwealth countries from around the time of the first world war.

So the situation remains that there is no medal for the individual who has made the sacrifice.

You're right. But he wasn't on Operations at the time.

Edit to add: I also disagree that he "made" the sacrifice. He wasn't deployed on Ops, accepting a level of risk higher than what is expected in normal day to day life.
He simply had the ultimate "bad day", to be blunt.Pork Eating Crusader
