If there was ever a reason why the NDM should never, ever be issued, then this thread is it....

    The Elizabeth Cross.

It has been awarded, now retrospectively, to the families of all those killed by terrorist activity since (please correct me as year is off top of my head) 1948.

Long winded, well thought out and presented, but flawed for all the reasons stated previously. I still think it is a vanity award, being sought by those who attend Remembrance services who are jealous that others have medals and they don't.

I fully believe our medal criteria is fine the way it is. Merely joining up shoud never - ever - get you a guaranteed medal. Now Bosnia is done, Iraq closed, in a few years you will see SNCO's with only a HERRICK medal - and perhaps not even that. The last 2 decades have been a medalfest to be sure, but who knows what the future holds?

I have a capbadge, a blazer badge and a veterans badge. The addition of a NDM would only serve to confirm to other veterans the fact that I was never called upon to do anything out of the ordinary.

In the eyes of the general public however, the wearing of the medal might hint at acts of gallantry. I would therefore not be comfortable wearing such an award.

Sorry but it's NOT a medal and isn't awarded to the serviceman or women killed. It is an 'emblem' soley for the Next of Kin. It doesn't recognise or honour the service of the victim, only the loss by the family. It has been used in other commonwealth countries from around the time of the first world war.

Don't get me wrong, it should not be demeaned, but there is a misconception that the Elizabeth Cross is a medal - it isn't, as it hasn't been afforded that status. The Cross is virtually identical to that used in other countries, for almost 100 years.

So the situation remains that there is no medal for the individual who has made the sacrifice.

You're right. But he wasn't on Operations at the time.

What else do you want? The Conspicuous Road Traffic Accident Cross?

Edit to add: I also disagree that he "made" the sacrifice. He wasn't deployed on Ops, accepting a level of risk higher than what is expected in normal day to day life.

He simply had the ultimate "bad day", to be blunt.

    That sums it up nicely.

"Excuse me, what is your medal for?"
    "For serving in the Army"
"Isn't that why you have a capbadge on your blazer? And a tie? And a Veterans badge?"
    "Errrrrmmmm................................... "
