Idi Amin and Gaddafi were both quite keen on bling. I expect that the Dictator's Exchange Allience T'internet Hub (DEATH) is buzzing with theads about who got it and who missed out and who was going to create an even bigger and better and blingier gong for an even better event.
Kin Ill Jung never seemed to have any bling. So ronery. Nobody ruve him...A DEAD STATESMAN

Apparently, the NDM is on its way.....so all those who didn't get the QDJM will now only have to do with the NDM....but that will brighten up the beggers day

UPDATE. A medal review has just been completed by Sir John Holmes and it looks as though all who served since WW2 will get a NDM (National Defence Medal) Last Year N.Z. Issued one for 3 years service and 5 years ago, Australia issued one for 4 years service Approved by the same Queen I might add.... I am part of the committee involved in this project. As a side issue, I am attempting to get the GSM (Cyprus) qualifications reduced from 120 days to 30. A brutal campaign with 371 killed and more than 50% National servicemen under age 21 Other campaign only need 1 day with little, or no fatalities. So, hang in there....

The full recommendations are here. On the NDM he had this to say:
I'm not sure I'd agree with you that it's on the way. 'Worthy of consideration' is not exactly a ringing endorsement. I'm also slightly surprised that they are suggesting it as anew class of medal. Surely it would be a (short) service medal.
Recommendation 7
The idea of a National Defence Medal as a recognition of military service of whatever form is worthy of consideration but is in a separate category from military campaign medals and should be treated accordingly. Its merits, and examples from other countries, should be looked at by a Cabinet Office-led working group in the first place, before consideration by the reconstituted HD Committee and its sub-committee. Any recommendations should be made initially to the government, rather than The Queen, and would then need to be the subject of wider political and other consultation, since this is a decision of broad national significance which would require a broad political and public consensus.
As I've said before I have some sympathy with the campaigners without completely agreeing with them. Personally I feel my chest is already overburdened with gizzits (I could have another one if I applied for it) so I wouldn't really want one myself.
Maybe anyone getting the NDM should have to hand in an existing service medal to qualify and would have to hand back the NDM if they wanted the LSGC or VRSM etc.A DEAD STATESMAN

“The object of giving medals, stars and ribbons is to give pride and pleasure to those
who have deserved them. At the same time a distinction is something which
everybody does not possess. If all have it, it is of less value. There must, therefore,
be heart-burnings and disappointments on the borderline. A medal glitters, but it
also casts a shadow. The task of drawing up regulations for such awards is one
which does not admit of a perfect solution. It is not possible to satisfy everybody
without running the risk of satisfying nobody. All that is possible is to give the
greatest satisfaction to the greatest number and to hurt the feelings of the fewest.”

Even Winny said there are going to be winners and losers. I have to say I would gladly replace my QGJM and QDJM with an NDM. That's because I feel proud of having served in HM Forces, yet with the Jubilee medals I feel nothing at all. Ultimately all medals of this type are bling, and if you are so consumed with not getting one, you need to re focus your priorities. That said, would I turn one down? No. Would I feel a lesser person if I had no medals? Certainly not.

I'm not sure I agree with you. I don't think the concept of the Veteran's Badge is worthless and devalued although think the badge its self is a bit tatty. I can't quite put my finger on what it is about it or how it could have been done better. Probably a snobbery thing but it looks like a gift shop pin badge. Perhaps if it was silver/white metal it might be more medalic and wearable.
As for the NDM being worthless and devalued I don't think it would have less value than the Jubilee bling.A DEAD STATESMAN
