No they 'sponsored' the games, by giving a 'philanthropic' financial gift. In return they were given the chance to tell all and sundry how good they were for sponsoring the games... and a load of seats to various sportiing events and tax concessions too, probably.
In contrast you would have bought your seat. You couldn't put on your facebook or company website 'proud supporter of the XXX Olympiad' even though you too had given money to the games.

Nope, I am pretty sure they were 'given' them. The cash was for sponsorship, not the seat. If they had paid for the seats I'd imagine lots of Boardmembers getting the right hump that their minions did not go and sit in the seats.
Likewise the seats for the media and Olympic 'family'.
You buy the product not the 'free' gift in various promotions do you not?

The sensible thing to do would be to have a Twitter account for 'Olympic Tickets' and twenty minutes or so before each event see how many tickets are available at the venue and announce via Twitter that for £10 the first x hundred people to the ticket booths can watch the 1st round of the indoor shooting or the swimming heats or whatever. At least the seats would be filled up and a few people would get the chance to see some of the games live.
I can't quite work up any outrage though. Sorry.

So, a TA battalion or nine Regular Guards battalions? Not a difficult choice, then (especially as we don't have nine Regular Guards battalions).
