We are talking about the green nylon ones arent we?
Yes, c/w metal frame. The weight suprised me but I weighed it may times to ensure I wasn't penalised & given a couple of bricks!

I feel the need to go a bit bigger than most, I miss my Combat engineer tractor, better known as a Frog.

Because of the amphib capabilities you could shut down the cooling fans, great on long exercises, just switch the fans off about 5k's from a town and just as you get there it blows a coolant pipe, giving you long enough to get a schnellie while you fix it.
You could also whip out the NBC filters and replace them with beer, it had the added bonus of cooling them as well. what a machine!

they had a terrible reputation for breaking down

I believe the same was true of the 44 pattern webbing although that was waterproofed to a degree

Not quite right - when the large pack was worn, the small pack was worn on the left hip, suspended from the ends of the shoulder cross-straps.

was it just me, or did everyone have problems with the L straps? If I remember right you had to have the bodyshape of quasimodo to get them anywhere near a snug fit. I dont think I ever got them fitting right, and running with that pack on...well thats another story
