Re: What Do You Miss?
I walked out on the cavalry in 1982, seeing a better life in a shiny-arrse corps. I walked out of the latter in 1989, see a better life in the Civvy Street Lancers.
I didn't think I'd ever look back at either lot. I never have looked back at the RAPC. But last month a great man of the 15/19H died, I could not allow myself not to turn up and show my respect and I when I fronted up and saw all those faces (many of whom I thought would have no reason to pass the time of day with me) I could not believe what a great bunch they were.Emsdorf and Victory!
Drive me closer!
I want to hit them with my sword!

Bashering up, having a mega brew up and scoff and couple of tinnies, and then lying in a nice warm sleeping bag listening to the rain on the basha...and hoping the rain will stop by the time we have to move out.
Winning a regimental troop test competition and bragging in the bar afterwards...
A brew and an egg banjo after a wet night patrol in NI...
Sports afternoons in Gibraltar...
Friday afternoon happy hours in the mess...

In the career of glory one gains many things; the gout and medals, a pension and rheumatism....all of these fatigues experienced in your youth, you pay for when you grow old. Because one has suffered in years gone by, it is necessary to suffer more, which does not seem exactly fair.

Re: What Do You Miss?
I miss having something in common with everybody around you,the same sense of what is funny, stupid, boring.Of course it age and experiences that define that but why are there so many people who havent done anything, and have nothing to talk about, and will never do.Bloody football is all I hear about, most overrated sport in the world.Thousands of people wanting to know what Ghana did last night.Take me back 30 years please.

After being out all night in the freezing cold, doing 1k minefields or a bridge gallop. Coming back to the Harbour Area and finding an all in stew with a loaf of RAOC bread waiting. Pure Heaven.
Grolsh at 1DM a throw, and knowing you can get pissed on the 20DM you found down the back of the sofa and still have enough for brattie and chips.
