Instant flashback to hearing those words on a Wednesday afternoon having had a good kickabout at football, walking back to the basha to soak in a bath when the SOS said these words to me. I was going to bathe and change into something appropriate. SOS told me not to bother cos they were all waiting, so I legged it up to RHQ where I discovered the RSM was ready to wheel a guilty barsteward into CO's Orders and I was star witness but nobody had invited me.
This was about 1980 give or take a year and I was wearing thin, tight, white cotton shorts that were de rigeur at the time. It's a good job I was in Command Troop and the CO, Adj and RSM all knew me intimately. JC (RSM) only briefly tutted, but the faces on the Adj and the CO made it all worthwhile. I shudder to think what I looked like to them.Emsdorf and Victory!
Drive me closer!
I want to hit them with my sword!

Dropping a silent, deadly fart in the back of a crowded vehicle and just as it begins to develop nicely, looking accusingly at a mate whilst coughing "You dirty fcuker!"
"Still as Saxon slow in starting. Still as wierdly want to win."

It is just me, or is this a bit of a painful thread to read?
Most things I miss have been mentioned several times. Most revolve around being a young cold-war-warrior in BAOR, and all the fun that went with that..........
So....thanks for making me realise how hum-drum my current civvy existence is..lol Been out longer than I was in, but it never leaves you.
This thread should be required reading for all those currently disenchanted with life in green and looking to bale-out. It's been said before, but the grass is rarely greener on the other side

That tree over there go!!
If you are able,
save them a place
inside of you
and save one backward glance
when you are leaving
for the places they can
no longer go.
Be not ashamed to say
you loved them,
though you may
or may not have always.
Take what they have left
and what they have taught you
with their dying
and keep it with your own.
And in that time
when men decide and feel safe
to call the war insane,
take one moment to embrace
those gentle heroes
you left behind.

Just reread this thread and realised that what I really miss is the camaraderie, and the fact that after a few years out, you feel like Banquo's ghost, as funny things from ten years ago are regarded with blank stares by the new people you don't know from a hole in the ground and vice versa.
As I have said before I was TA from 79-2006, and even the people still in have a different perspective. So all the banter is six to seven years out of date even with the people I knew at the time.
