Oh God - the horrors of Gateway House. As I wrote in an email home after my first experience of the place:

For those unacquainted with Brize, the “Rough Guide” to RAF establishments comments along these lines: “You will arrive at the comfortable departure lounge, where you will be able to buy a wide range of Pot Noodles and drinks from vending machines, but not get any change to operate said machines. Just when you have given up seeing a human being again an RAF Movements Corporal will stick his head around a door and ask, ‘alright, mate’.” The guide goes on to state: “You will be accommodated at the Gateway House, a motel-style transit hotel. Lavishly equipped with echoing corridors and extra hard-banging doors, your night will be enlivened by parties of servicemen taking full advantage of partaking in end of leave celebrations until the early hours, and those telephoning their loved ones outside your room until 3am”. On food the guide is no less complementary: “A wide range of airline meals, lovingly kept under heat lamps until dry and elegantly presented on sectioned, floppy plastic trays is available until 10pm, again offered without any apparent intervention from the human hand. Bring sandwiches”. In all seriousness the bar does a good range of beer and of course whiskey (the latter unavailable in theatre) and breakfast was an excellent fry-up.
I swear there must be some kind of Crabs-only luxury mess somewhere in the building where edible scoff is available...

Do you mean 1983? Mercer / Imphal Barracks? If so, I think you'll find it was up to 1983 cos when I arrived at 12 Armd Wksp in the annex to Mercer in November 1982, 1 Green Howards were on the next ferry behind me to take over as Osnabruck's resident infantry battalion on top of the hi

    ll about the level crossing.
Probably 1983.Would not have gone back there even if it was 100 years later

I remember having breakfast in some big shed at Harwich after an overnight crossing from the Hook. Probably the worst I've ever had in a 'military dining facility'.

Ah, Glamoc; I was there in late 95/early 96 and the roof of the building it was set up in was unsafe so we had to eat whilst wearing our helmets.

I think it belonged to the QRH who were making the best of a bad job.

Re: Favourite and worst cookhouses you've ever eaten in

I had to visit visit RAF Abingdon in the late 60s to see some of my guys go though the parachute phase of P Coy.No one complained about the food. However in the officers mess(canteen style) ,we were warned not to wear OGs,smocks etc,as one had to 'dress' for lunch. We went in en masse in our working clothes, and no one uttered a word.We then trapped the few WAAF officers, who were lookers, compounding thew fury of the crabs.Happy days!
