Having just finished this book I can confirm he did pass selection, TQ and continuation.
He was present his beret at the basing ceremony.
He left 3 months later as he had to move Devon.
He came across well and it was a good read. He said the though he passed selection he knew nothing about soldiering and it would take 3 years to be fully accepted.

Yes, it mentions getting his beret at the end of the book, but he leaves before he can do any of the entry skills/specialist skills training, or any exercises with 21 SAS. One of his fellow new blades says he sweated for 2 or 3 years to get this badge. Ballinger mentions that he spotted his old friend off the train journey who prompted him to attempt selection somewhere in the post-badging ceremony piss up.

I like the attitude though, do all of that and then just walk away, not allowing it to become his second job. Many would not have the guts to do that.

Just ignore the wankers on these forums that say the TA is shit. They're just old useless cunts in the regulars trying to hold on for their pension.
