I've been in the CCF for 3 years, I'm joining up after I'm educated but that won't be for another 5 years (2 years of a-levels plus 3 years of univercity) so I've been thinking for a while about joining the TA during that time.
The German language has two words that translate into 'education' in English: Ausbildung and Erziehung. The first is better described as your schooling and the latter is your accumulation of life's experiences (i.e. filling your bag of wisdom before your bag of luck gets emptied). The TA will certainly contribute to your Erziehung: in the four units I have served with I've met characters I would never otherwise have met Monday to Friday and done some pretty unusual stuff. However, you mustn't neglect the Ausbildung by doing too much with the Reserves: this is what will pay the bills for your 'three score years and ten'.
A couple of guys I enlisted with last year are doing their A Levels in May, so have not been very active of late. However, it's worth your while joining your local unit and getting your training out of the way in the break-times, at least then you can get the full enjoyment out of the TA when you leave school.
I forgot to add that it can take up to about 6 months before you're actually in the system, so waiting around for something to happen is better done sooner than later. Or is this a problem exclusive to N.I. (security issues)?
when i was doing my a-levels, we had a guy who was in inf. TA and school said it was ok but if he got deployed and ,missed a lot of work, he would not be allowed to sit his exams. he went for it, but didnt get deployed. thinks he managed to get 3 A's and a couple of B's in the end!

Bloody Sam Rackham

Every pirate lives for something different. For some, it's the open sea. For others (the masochists), it's the food. For you, it's definitely the fighting. You have the good fortune of having a good name, since Rackham (pronounced RACKem, not rack-ham) is one of the coolest sounding surnames for a pirate. Arr!

Students won't get deployed, admin error if they get the letter or the country is in serious trouble.
Joining the TA whilst in sixth form??????? DO IT!!!!!
joined at 17 just before starting my second year of A-levels, not a problem balancing the two, if you have exams, coursework, etc just inform your unit and don't turn in or limit the amount of time your devoting to the TA till exams are over. simple!
The TA is just about the best and most flexible employer for students; "four months summer holiday, not a problem what courses do you want to do????" Kerching!! doing this i've managed to take home more money than any of my contempories (sp?) who are sweating it out in a job they hate at a smidge over £4 an hour. During the hol's get friendly with the Q man or PSI and ask if there is any courses, stores work, kit maintenance or driving jobs need doing. (cant drive get on a driving course!!!)
Should be earning a total of about £7,500 this year after bounty and tax reclaimed how many of your mates are going to get that AND whilst doing something they enjoy?????
Let us know how you get on and what unit are you joining??
Oh and just an observation but i despair at the nations education system dur to some of the spelling mistakes on here by people claiming to be students!!!! You give myself and my fellow tax dodging breathren a bad name!!
