Very, very true and if what I've heard is correct the catch up is massive (months not weeks/weekends).

Going the other way is far easier (depending on role/position/rank - some but in the minority will require a lot of retraining). In my ideal world, RSigs recruits would go through infantry training to regimental signaller standard and then transfer across to Signals.

If you mean the skills you learn on a trade camp, the answer is no, some infantry units have signals platoons and coming from that background is very helpful.

if you mean the training that you go through at Malta barracks and Pirbright the answer is no. Transferring from the signals to the infantry is very smooth, if your fully trained when you transfer all you need to do is the two weeks at Catterick.

If I was an RSWO I might say that to get you through the door ... but onto that RRU you'd go.

How long have you been in? You seem to be giving advice on transferring to the Infantry, but do not know what an RRU is...

Have you gone from Sigs to the thickest tree in the forest? ( infantree )

. Funny stuff. Only been in for 2 and and half years. 2 of those as a siggy. So yer must be thick as fcuk me. The only signals courses I did was BSS a 14 day trade camp which included boman PET. Then did the BOWMAN course to be qualified. what is RRU explain for a young infantree-er. Would it be regular radio user. Hmm WAhh......

Erm No i didnt have to do the infantry weekends just Catterick. i thought i would have to but Malta rang up my recruiting staff at my unit and said i didnt need to. U get taught all the infantry weekend syllabus at Pirbright on top of alot more.

Hmm well should really have done RT 7,8 and 9 then CIC as the weekends introduce you to the SUSAT and more intense PT. I did Pirbright and Trade as a CS Op but according to the PSI I still have to do those weekends. Might just be a Steelback thing but I'm glad I did as it just saved a lot of grief realising the massive difference in fitness standards.

so have you already done them. the way you have wrote your last post sounds like you havent by the tense you have used.

Massive fitness levels? u mean completing a CFT, 25 kg 6 miles. unless your an old fatty the fitness levels are not that hard to get used to. my unit holds weekends before catterick called PRE CIC weekend. you do a PFT, weapon handling test, CFT 25 kg 4-6miles.

SUSAT sights can be taught in a drill night.

I've done RT 7 now and been backsquadded due to a back injury, and I'm only 19 but it was a bit of a shock at the standard of fitness we were expected to have. There was an actual emphisis on it where as when I was in the Sigs that often (and wrongly) got put on the back burner untill it was bounty time.

Then this sounds like a Battalion thing to me then, however again I am glad to be dong this way as it was good to get a bit of a beasting and a kick up the arse fitness wise.

Indeed Columating and SUSAT can be taught at unit but the 3 Infantry weekends you do (in my Battalion anyway) range work on 7 with the SUSAT (100 standing, kneeling sitting, 50m and a 25m auto shoot) then after that the PTI gets set upon you for a while. Luckily I have all this to look forward to again while thinking 'what the feckin hell am I doing?' :D

Yes correct, when I did mine it was called TARU but use of the term RRU was more common because it's what the regulars were familiar with.

It's a basic radio/VP/BATCO course thats found all over the army. I'm not saying you don't know a lot of it but I do know (or did) that it teaches VP to a far higher level than TA RSignals CS Op. It was a unenforced rule that every LCpl in the infantry needed to attend this course, a definate for a Cpl (in every type of platoon).

All I'm suggesting is humility rather than facing humiliation at a latter stage. When I changed capbadges my new Sigs soldiers were going on about how good they were when they worked with 4 Yorks, but at the same time I was hearing comments about how piss poor at comms the RSignals soldiers were from 4 Yorks (then EWRR). The truth was the Scallies enjoyed working with 4 Yorks but they were unaware of their poor comms skills blinded by a touch of arrogance.

Be confident on your skills with BOWMAN but in reality your not going to use much of it unless deployed with the regulars.. TA BOWMAN can be delivered in about 5 x 40 mins periods (thats including a 40 min Health and Safety 'Don't lick the radios' lesson).

In my perfect TA training world, RRU/TARU would be delivered by regional Brigade training teams, alongside DITS with an added ECDL module. Aimed at all recruits to Signals platoons/troops and potential JNCO's. It would be a simple addition and huge benefit to many ICS/CS/Sigs platoons/troops

I must be a thicko too, 20 years in the Corps and don't know what it is either.......

Coz, it's a basic infantry course

VP covering the entire pam less working with arty/mortars and tanks (from all arms perspective). Very little radio's, BATCO being 2x40 mins not like another corps........
