It's not really a 'make your own rules up to keep people happy' kind of club.

I'd say when you lot learn to put the "u" back in colour, honour and many of our other words you have bastardised(note no"Z"), then I'll consider saluting "U". I will however call Mr President "Sir" even though he does not have a machine gun which was required for that courtesy in my day. Not wishing to be non PC of course.
I will never forget that I was once a soldier.
There is no higher calling. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Just because two ranks share a name, doesn't mean they're the same - an Army Captain isn't the same as an RN Captian, same with Lieutenant. HCav NCOs aren't called Sergeants - should an infantry Sgt refuse to follow the orders of a Staff Corporal?

A rose by any other name is still a rose, a commissioned officer by any other name is still commissioned.

How about they just classify them as OF-0.5 and save all the arguing?
Not at all... they are equivalency tables hence the three WO2 (Brittap) that I mentioned being spread over the US rank spectrum (e-8 to CWO03).

The Yanks invented this extra rank table, and put it beneath the lowest rnk normally saluted by other nations.

Most WO statuses weren't even invented until WW1... and in most cases they were similar to our Commisariats and what not when they were brought in to the military rank structure... the Yanks just chose to put them in their own 'wierd' rankings. And they knew teh QRs (and otehrs) at the time.

Not to mention there is not even a uniform arrangement, some forces have 5, some have 3 and all in between. Some hav even been deestablished and established even more recently... some are on the books but never been used.

It probably does need sorting out. Even if it were as you say OF - 0.1 to OF - 0.5.

The DS answer. QR's apply and are quite clear on this subject - for Chief_Two's convenience, I have some advice: become a Second Lieutenant and then you can be saluted as many times as you like.

Ah, but you could say that's a glass-half empty situation; they put the extra rank table above the highest rank normally not saluted by other nations...
