Transocean are supposedly after around 3000 emplyees next couple of years due to retirement and some new builds that they have ongoing, however work would be abroad as they are getting rid of 2 rigs in the North Sea.
I have served 10 years in the royal engineers and i am a fully qualled electrician, i have recently signed off to persue a career offshore. Im after a bit of advice as to what sort of job i should be looking at doing offshore. Obviously i want a job that offers the best pay and career opertunites that i can get.
I havent started any resettlement courses yet so there is scope for me to get other quals that could help me get offshore
Assuming you have done your survival and medical, which you can do with your re-settlement, then it is just a case of putting yourself out there to agencies and the like, but be aware that for electricians and such they usually require offshore experience which put's you in that catch-22, situation cannot get offshore as a sparky because you don't know the offshore systems and such, there is a guy on the rig i work on started out as a Roustabout even though he is a qualified sparky he just bided his time waiting to get on the companys electrician training course, so you may have to start some where else just to get your foot in the door.
cheers for the reply trecass, im quite willing to do any job really just to get a foot in the door. Another option is ROV but i suppose its the same cath 22 situation.

Danny,
You will be looking at either electrotechnical installation or electrical maintenance. Go to this link: ECITB National Occupational Standards Look through the list and click the hyperlink to the relevant trade then open the suite of occupational standards for that trade.
Read through both the knowledge requirement and performance requirements, see what you can and cannot currently do and then focus your resettlement appropriately. These are the NVQ Level 3 Standards for Engineering Construction Trades, the level of a technician in the engineering construction industry. It's probably worth mentioning that you don't need to go offshore to earn good money and initially a job ashore within the industry may well get you some contacts and experience. Look at companies like Worley Parsons, CB&I, KBR, Aker, Shaw, Stone and Webster, M W Kellogg, Snampragetti etc, they all have their own websites and advertise and recruit directly. Work is primarily around Aberdeen, Teeside, Liverpool, West Wales, Dorset but could be anywhere where a powerstation is being maintained, oil comes ashore or pharmaceuticals are manufactured......... don't neglect the nuclear industry, it may just take off and someone has to wire up that Olympic stadium.
I am a 47 year old ex mob who has had 15 years experiance offshore whether it was with Sodexho or SAS Service Partner as a Steward or as a General Assistant / Heli Deck Crew with Wood Group, I have been out of the game now for near on ten years but am facing redundancy, I know I would have to redo my medical amd OPITO Survival course but I want is a general feeler for how the industry is your comments would be much appreciated
many thanks
Old-git
Not sure buddy sounds like your on the steward side of things, i work on the drilling side of the game. As long as you pass your medical i think you should be allright. They allways look for experience and if youve got it youve got a good chance.
Seems to be a lot more positions coming up as operators are starting to go 2 and 3 so they will need a lot more people to cover the posts. I know KCA Deutag have recently went 2 and 3 on a lot of platforms and have taken on a lot more bods. A lad from my crew is away Roughnecking on the scott platform.
Try giving the companies and agencies a ring and they'll probably sort you out mate.
A very interesting thread and it has piqued my interest but i couldnt find any jobs for roustabouts or indeed any other non qualified posistions. Or maybe im looking at the wrong sites can anybody throw some links at me also would being a former stab be a help or hinderence if a lot of higer ups are ex regs :D
Father Dougal: God Ted, I've heard about those cults. Everyone dressing in black and saying our Lord's going to come back and judge us all.
Father Ted: No...no Dougal, that's us. That's Catholicism you're talking about there

The rigs have already gone and they were Global rigs which merged with Transocean this year,
As to 3000 leaving its not just Transocean its the industry as a whole the average age of the offshore worker is mid 50's and no new blood is coming into the game, plus when the 2 / 3 rota becomes mandatory which it will eventually, even more staff will be needed.
I'm sure they'll get round this as Noble have done by employing cheap labour from Lithuania, Latvia etc more and more rigs ( especially Dutch sector ) are crewed up by Eastern europeans/ Maltese / Philippino's
I've just spoke to a toolpusher that works for KCA, he told me they are always looking for new starts. They are trying to get a new start on every crew.
