I found that after coming over here from small town donegal to my first posting in London that after a while I stopped caring if people knew or what they thought back home. People will inevitably find out and if they do, and have a problem with it then quite frankly, fuck them. After all these years, the backwards attitudes of people at home became less and less relevant and now I hardly ever go home except a week here or there to visit family.

Ah, but it's more dangerous now than it was 5 years ago. Many have convinced themselves that "the war's over" but we know these twats would just love to kill a Brit - I'd prefer to avoid that if possible!

Thanks again for your response....much appriciated...I knew a Doctor who worked in Ireland and he was very impressed of the hospitality of the locals...and loved Irish Stew too.

Just wanted to ask you another thing if you dont mind sir? were there Marxists in the IRA? and I heard the worst nightmare for the IRA were SAS units...if true....what made the SAS so scary to the IRA...Thanks again Mo Cara

This isnt the right forum for discussing the IRA , however try this link CAIN: Northern Ireland Conflict, Politics, and Society. Information on 'the troubles'

it may be of some help to you.

Be VERY careful with Facebook. The South is often easier than some areas of the North as most of the twats live up here or in the nice border counties!

Kiddeh - if you live in a Shinner area, then yes, a bit extra PERSEC is advisable. I wouldn't shit a brick about it, but similarly, I wouldn't stumble home on my own in the wrong part of town, pissed and with a MOD 90 in my back pocket. That said, if you're joining the Booties, you can probably handle yourself to a decentish extent.

I take PERSEC moderately seriously. Most of my mates are D4 dwelling liberal tossbags, so I don't care what they know. But
when out and about I usually ask that we don't reference it in case some muppet in a pub decides he has a point to prove.

Best of luck in any case. I'm only in training myself, but love it so far.

Re. Facebook - very good point.

When you get into basic and want to connect with all your new mates, think about using Google+. It lets you group people much easier and you can keep both lives entirely distinct of each other (in cyberspace at least).

You'd better get used to that kind of bollocks if you come to us - lots of people who have never crossed the Irish Sea expect you to have a comprehensive understanding of everything from Henry II, through plantations to the intrecacies of the post '69 troubles - mailnly due to dodgy hollywood movies, where everyone south of the border knows someone directly who's in the IRA - they will assume you are the mouthpiece of the Irish nation, and will steer every conversation to 'the troubles' (at least until you tell them to f**k off!)

To reiterate F.S's remark, this is not a IRA / PIRA appropriate time. Yes there were Marxists in IRA, most notable in my generation was Brian Keenan (b.1942) and Ivor Bell. Keenan, a good linguist in French, Arabic and German was credited with setting up the earlier links with Ghaddafi and the then GRU in East Germany. Their brief was to drive PIRA further and further into a Marxist political 'imperialist war' stance.
