Indeed it was. One day people will realise that a ten year-old with a computer could fake a MOD 90, and it isn't universal ID. Stop whining and get your passport out. Or stop looking so bloody young

So what if that was in the paper?

Come to Woking then. Troops are banned from nearly every pub. Fucking right too, the amount of trouble caused here over the years..

Now, clearly I don't mean that active service is funny, what I mean it is hard to explain to people that were not with you. Even if you are trying to explain a situation to someone that does know what you are on about.

I'm 40 now and out of the British Army many many a year but my first tour of active serve was in South Armagh in 87 at the age of 19. My first job on return, when everyone else went on leave was to got Kent to escort a coffin. I don't give a f who you are or where you've been, try and explain that to your civvy 19 year old mates who are just out of college and just discovered dope?

And that wasn't the end of it, that was the beginning..

You do this and you do that and, at the end of the day, it means something to you and the mates you were with at the time but it's something that you CANNOT explain.

It's a bond you have with your mukka's that you will have with NOONE else you ever interact with and that inclues family, friends, wives and girlfriends.

A WW2 veteran can't communicate with an Op Banner veteran who can't communicate with a modern day veteran. It's not that one was "harder" than the other, it's that they were different.

And f* me, a 7.62 short comes at you at the same velocity whatever the accent of the sender.

One thing that we all have in common is that we view life differently. It's not something you actually realise at the time, as a 19 year old burying your mate, you realise it later. But others DO see it. If you're lucky they tell you.

But whatever. You are different. I won't say that you are better or worse than anyone else, but you are different.
    Well put my friend.

Woking sits "down to the road" from Pirbright and Aldershot. It's a short train ride from both. 20+ years ago, you'd have 50 paras fighting 50 jock guards up the high street and the winners fighting the locals. Literally straight over the road from the Train station was a pub called the Albion. Many a squaddy form thos days will tell you about rows in and around that pub!

Anyway, Woking got sick of it a long time ago and banned all troops. As it stands today, I know of only three pubs that let squaddies in knowinlgy. Brookwood Hotel (By brookwood station - just up the road form Pirbright), The Fox (Just up the road fromBisley Ranges) and the Anchor (Knaphill High Street).

The issue of the Anglian that got turned away from a hotel was slightly different. Basically, he booked a room and then on arrival was asked for ID and when he produced they told him to go. You have to bear in mind the hotel in question is a few feet from the main drag in woking and the nightclubs and Weathersppons type bars.

Common sense would have said that a single squaddie checking in, sober with a car, was not the same as a bunch of pissed up recruits but unfortunately the duty receptionist applied the letter fo the law.

Right or wrong bud - how many garrison towns you served in that do not have pubs that squaddies can't get into?

You also have to remember that Woking is not a garrison town per se and does not reply on the garrisons nearby for any form of income or assistance to it's economy.

Hi All the wait is OVER

The Premiere for Broken Britain will be at the LOWRY on Salford Quays on March 19th 2009, I want as many of you guys to attend as possible, to say thankyou in person for the support and having the piss royaly taken out of me for 8 months, it will give us a chance to meet and speak in person, i'll be doing a Q+A after the screening, so come heckle, support it, or just get drunk (cash bar i am afraid, so bring the wages)

add me as a friend on facebook, or join the BB group (post above)

PM me though here if you want to come.... the online version will follow soon after, i also have a ringtone of the film and will be putting it online as a download with profits going to help for heros, its a funny one and i think it will appeal to the squaddie sense of humour, watch this space.
