The UN/AU will have to get their helos from someone other than UK-period.We don't have enough for our own needs,so why should we ''offer'' them elsewhere.I hope that our senior officers stand up to our politicos,on that one?
As others have said, the cupboard is bare. The majority of the cabs we have are shot, held together by black maskers with lots of bad language and there ain't enough to go around. I believe we're even stripping out the ASW gear from mothballed Sea Kings to convert them to troop carriers.
Our European Allies have hundreds of shiny helicopters sitting there getting spiffy for parades and little else (Although the Germans aren't allowed to fly at night).
Its their turn on this one.
Abslutely spot on....they should do the same with the ASW Merlins as well(the ones we've got off the Danes are converted to utility spec) but as everybody's said they are needed in Afhanistan more than anything.
How many Chinooks could have been bought instead of carrying on with the Merlin?
The campaign I'm running on http://blogolob.net is largely focussed on using the 2008 Olympics as a window of opportunity to shame China into putting pressure on the Sudanese government. China is Sudan's main backer and takes 70% of their exports, including oil.
However, I'm also trying to do what I can to get the UN mission underway. The UN voted unanimously to take this action. Now it must act.
Regarding our own helicopters, I would very much like to know from an authoritative source exactly what the true situation is. Who can one believe?
I don't agree that it's not our problem. As long as it's our world it's our problem.
Just posted on your blog but I'll ask you again here.
Nice sentiment but why don't YOU do something to help Darfur instead of being outraged that someone else isn't doing something? What exactly have YOU done to help?
You people aren't interested in funding the Armed Forces properly but expect them, when under extreme pressure in Afghanistan, to jump and assuage your conscience.
It’s much better to whine on the internet that others aren’t doing enough than actually doing something yourself.
All I can say is: Steve go and f*ck off you misguided idiot. Who are you to attempt to shame us into jumping on the next plane and go and sort a problem out in Africa, when it is clear as day that we dont have the manpower or the resources to fulfill the the jobs we have already.
How about you get a gang of your pals and go for a right old jolly down there yourself, you could even report back to this thread in, say 6 months with a sitrep.

I spot a flaw, Steve & his pals don't have any balls or a backbone.
Or are you going to be another one of those who cares so much that you'll whinge endlessly that others aren't doing enough? Don't bother, I think I know the answer.
Agreed VB, other than whining on the interweb, these type dissapear when THEY are asked to actually do anything themselves. Moral and physical cowards.
You know nothing about me, yet that doesn't stop you making nasty remarks and personal insults, does it?
What thoroughly pleasant chaps most of you seem to be. So glad I came here. Bye now.
Does that mean you are going to do nothing but sit at home and gob off?
Does it make you sleep better at night, writing blogs to save the thousands that are dying?
as Ord says, dont make a noise when you leave
Of course he's going to sit at home being outraged that people aren't doing enough, even though I gave him a list of 38 or 39 NGOs he could have signed up with to make a real difference. But we all know his type, no moral or physical courage to actually do anything himself. Busy in the student union bar holding his manhood cheap, tosser, and he knows it.
