Stop throwing your teddy in the corner, if u like towns like Aldershot then fine, but shooting everyone down cos they think its a dump is not really cool, I was there for 4 weeks not 5 days to discover what wonders Aldershot had to offer which was not much. If you read all the comments the majority of people think the place is a dump and a shitpit. Have a happy life in your ghosttown!!! lol
If more barracks/units disappear from Aldershit (sorry Aldershot) there will be nothing left.

I spent 16 yrs in Aldershot and loved it. It was clean, central to everywhere I wanted to be and I classed it as home. The downturn came as the Bde moved to Colly, some dogshit units moved in and very soon the place turned into a vile, rubbish strewn cesspit. Feral pads brats and fat munting parents polluted the pads estates.

Considering the Army's involvement with the town (there wouldn't have been one without it),I suspect that they weren't consulted with regard to Aldershot's development/regression.Up to the late sixties, it had a lot going for it: cinemas, theatres, coffee bars, a fairground up opposite the Alex (whacked my chin on the steering wheel of a bumper car and had stitches at CMH).Ended up with office blocks which were never occupied (now flats), pubs closed (now flats), market closed (now the Wellington Centre, half empty).Although I hope against hope, Jeromes is probably not long for this world.Sigh.

Well I was there for a little longer than four weeks and I found the place depressing and I was fortunate enough to be in a decent building, not the asbestos riddled Buller Barracks.
For me it is cheap and nasty and the sad sight of the CMH rotting away was a symbol of what is happening to the Army.
The new medical centre - purple tiled monstrosity and WTF is the thing in the middle. In ten years it will need a complete overhaul. The new building look like something from toytown - too clean and tidy, no character.
I thought it would have been a good place to put HQLF - as people have said, close to London and Main Building and (more importantly) a place for jungle boot wearing staff officers to actually mix with Toms from an infantry battalion. I though that would have been a good reminder to folks on the HQ about who they are really there to command.
Does anyone know what is going to happen to the old 4 XX building - a grand old lady. I suspect it will be turned into a pub or flats, but who would want a flat there when most of the ground north of Alisons road is going to be "affordable housing"??
I suspect the chav trash and soldiers, separated by only a road may clash.
Maybe it will work, maybe decent people will move into the space left by Buller, the Garrison Officers Mess, Old CM centre etc.
A shame we can't reatin the space to house one of the Bdes returning from Germany, a part of me thinks it might be useful to have an A class Bde on Londons doorstep.
I'm just not sure what will happen, it may turn out well but the shops and facilities that drag the whole place down, to attract commuters, that will have to change.
Would have been great to see it in it's heyday - say around 1870 - 1900 with all the old barracks, still bits and pieces left but it's no longer the "home of the British Army".

Have you actually been inside the new health center.....No!...didn't think so!
Mate, it might not look impressive to you from the outside, but having had the pleasure of using it on quite a few occasions including this week. I can tell you now, you won't find a better facility like that anywhere in the country.
As for housing Bdes from Germany. I take it that you're under the impression that the military town is empty & that we've got the room for another Bde?
If the MOD hadn't sold off Monty lines Browning & the CMH plus outbuildings, maybe we would have.
There's as many troops in Aldershot today as there was 30 years ago.
Here's whats planned for the CMH. I wonder how many of the Chavs that you seem to think outnumber everybody else, will be able to afford a platz there!

How long were you in Aldershot?

Yes I notice a lack of insults, but also detect a 'smarminess' in your question.
If you'd bothered to read my posts, rather than skimp over them, cherry picking as you go along, you'll have noticed that I've not said that Aldershot is, & I quote "soo good".
On the contrary, I'm quite aware that it's not the best place in the country. However, my point is that it's much better than 'most' towns.
My main gripe is about people who come on here, spouting off their opinions of the place. When in fact, they don't know the place at all.
Their opinions are formed from spending a few weeks on a course in the military town & going down town for both their Saturday nights off.
Probably getting blown out by the local bicycle & then to cap it all, getting smacked in ther gob in "Tony's" on the way home.
That does not bestow on them the title of "Aldershot Tour Guide" yet they seem to think they know it all.
Had they spent a few years here, I would be more prepared to listen to what they say.
It's like, I wouldn't dream of telling you how to cook cabbage!
