I heard this in the context that it is one reason why previous MEPs, although now in parliament, will not speak out.

If so how the hell does he get away with it, but by God he does talk some home truths.

I would like to hear what he proposes to do instead though, as a lot of these people are very quick to critcise, but have no real agenda of their own.

"As we moved slowly through the outskirts of the town we passed row after row of little grey slum houses running at right angles to the embankment. At the back of one of the houses a young woman was kneeling on the stones, poking a stick up the leaden waste-pipe which ran from the sink inside and which I suppose was blocked. I had time to see everything about her - her sacking apron, her clumsy clogs, her arms reddened by the cold. She looked up as the train passed, and I was almost near enough to catch her eye." Sadly the Eu is unable to suatain a debate even about itself without enflaming passions. I for one believe that certain standards should apply and if the Eu elected reps get attendance payments they should be there for a substantial working day to get them, in fact they shouldnt get any salary unless are able to attend 75% of all planned business in the parliament buildings, they then shouldnt get expenses but warrants for travel and put up in travelodge style accom for which they pay (not reimburseable) and if they fail to attend they dont get paid. No pension without 10 years service and no tax free perks.
They didnt have to do the job, if I want to travel to London for work I have to pay for that travel, if I am lucky my employer may offer an interest free season ticket loan but thats all. No one asks these muppets to rip us off they vote for their own gravy train and rubber stamp the commissioners decisions to ensure they get their noses firmly in the trough.
An end to the EU or at least our participation in it will cheer me no end. I doubt if our taxes would drop though, its not like the govt to give up our money is it?

Very true and thats just the elected MEP's, think of the 27 UNELECTED Commissioners like the gargoylesque Ashton etc, the BASIC salary is c 245,000 euro's per annum up to 282,000 euro's per annum in Ashtons case. On top of this there is a "residence" allowance of a further 15% of their basic salary plus an "entertainment" allowanceof approx 7000 euro's per annum, 11,000 in Ashtons caseand a hefty 17,000 pa in Barosso's case, this in on top of rafts of other expenses including travel, "installation & severance" allowances, pensions etc. http://ec.europa.eu/commission_2010-...lements_en.pdf
No wonder they fight tooth & nail to keep their noses in the trough , This of course does not count the cost of droves of hangers on, assistants, secretaries, interpreters etc!

Wonderful system. Make individuals visit Floor Nine in person. EU arena for Outing Traits.

TS Eliot's The Hollow Men based on Conrad's Kurtz, the Belgian Imperial monster at the head of the Congo in Heart of Darkness. Or as John Donne puts it "whats become of mans great extent & proportion, when himselfe shrinks himselfe, and consumes himselfe to a handfull of dust?" Cue German MEP hiding in the lift. That was priceless.

These people really are accountable to no one. I'd love to have a vote on continued membership but they'd never allow it, they know what would happen.

Apparently Downing St says that the people of this country aren't bothered about getting a referendum

Perhaps they'd give us a vote on having a vote. No, they know what's best for us, we must rely on their superior wisdom.
